Lakers Drop Road Game to T'Wolves

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

Back at it again with the road losses. Well, for the good of tanking. Jordan Clarkson lead the Lakers in scoring with 18 points to go with 3 rebounds and 7 assists in the Lakers' 104-119 loss to the Timberwolves in Minnesota. Julius Randle, double-double, 12 points and 13 rebounds. D'Angelo Russell had an off night, chipping in 14 points and Corey Brewer started in place of Brandon Ingram, finishing with 11 points. Tarik Black lead the Lakers off the bench with a near double-double of 15 points and 9 rebounds and Tyler Ennis and Thomas Robinson tied behind Black with 12 points off the bench.

Lakers Couldn't Finish vs. Wizards

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

Exactly how you separate a playoff team from a lottery team. D'Angelo Russell was the Lakers' top performer with 28 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists, but the Wizards pushed through in the 4th quarter, handing the Lakers another loss 119-108. Jordan Clarkson followed with 22 points and Ivica Zubac chipped in 10 points to round out the starters. Tyler Ennis lead the bench in scoring again with 11 points and Tarik Black followed closely with 10 points.

The Las Vegas Raiders

The Oakland Raiders will be the Oakland Raiders no more. Today, in a 31-1 vote, the owners have approved the Raiders for relocation to the desert in Las Vegas. The Raiders have two one-year options at the current Coliseum site and Mark Davis expressed he wants to play in Oakland while the stadium is constructed in Las Vegas.

First and foremost, I can sympathize with the fans and the season ticket holders in Oakland and in the Bay Area. I can't imagine getting your heart torn out a 2nd time and maybe losing them for good. I remember my first and only Raider game in the Coliseum in 2011 vs. the Chicago Bears and the atmosphere is something that can't ever be replicated. I expressed that I'll still be a fan as long as the Raider name, logo, and colors are there, but they belong in Oakland. I'm listening to Libby Schaff and the Oakland City Council and I can agree with this, the City of Oakland never had a chance to negotiate with Mark Davis. Mark Davis was spending his time and resources in funding a stadium elsewhere. San Antonio and Carson are exhibits A and B. Mark has said he tried everything to stay in Oakland, but how? There's no question, the City of Oakland had ample time to do something and they sat on their hands. But, something just doesn't add up here. If the City of Oakland had a plan with Ronnie Lott and Fortress, why didn't Mark Davis consider weighing the options between that plan and the Las Vegas plan? If Mark Davis can easily find investors and banks to fund stadiums out-of-state, why didn't he find a single investor in the booming Bay Area to fund a stadium in Oakland?

With this relocation approval, I feel there's a lot of uncertainty and a lot of unanswered questions here. What happens to us here in the Bay Area who watch the Raider games on TV? It seems that the logical answer would be to get NFL Sunday Ticket just to watch the Raiders. But, is there a chance that they will still be televised locally here in the Bay when they move to Vegas? Is the NFL willing to take a big risk from moving to the 6th best market with an economy continuing to trend up to the 40th best market that is heavily contingent on the health of the economy? How will the NFL make up for that lost TV revenue? They lost a lot due to low ratings from last season. Fans who support the move say that Raider Nation is everywhere and they will sell out. Las Vegas is a tourist town and it will certainly draw a 50/50 crowd because of fans from the opposing teams will travel. Where will the home field advantage go? And most importantly, how will players from both the Raiders and the opposing teams handle the distractions in Vegas before game day?

This whole relocation thing reminded us that "cash is king" and "money talks." There was no way the NFL would say no to $750 million in free money and a possible Super Bowl venue. That's the harsh reality folks. Oakland refused to fork over that amount of taxpayers' money and that didn't sit well for the Raiders nor the NFL. Greed wins in the end. The same thing happened to the Rams and the Chargers, and the Raiders followed suit. I just sit here and wonder how the NFL can handle burning bridges with three home markets in less than a year. Ultimately the losers here are the fans, the season ticket holders in Oakland. But, the residents of Las Vegas may end up being the biggest loser here because of the astonishing amount of $750 million they need to fork over for the stadium. It's a ridiculous amount.

In conclusion, I'll affirm that I'm not burning any Raider merchandise. Even though they're moving to Las Vegas, I'm still going to rep my "R8DR4L" sweatshirt and it does mention "Oakland" on it. I'm not burning it nor am I selling it, I'm still going to rep it. I'm still going to rep my Darren McFadden #20 Raiders jersey (even though he's with the Cowboys). I'm still going to rep my "Committed For Life, The Nation You Love to Hate" shirt. I'm still going to rep my Raiders Football shirt. And I'm still going to wear my Raiders' hat with the old AFL helmet. I'm sad they won't be in the Bay Area any longer, but you do what you gotta do from a business standpoint. If I'm Mark Davis, I should probably stay away from the Coliseum and away from the Oakland-Alameda area because they're gonna make his life a living Hell. The city may change, but as long as the name, logo, and the colors, Silver and Black are still there, I'm still on board.

Lakers' Losing Streak vs. Blazers Carries On

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

Loss contributes to the tank job though. D'Angelo Russell lead the Lakers in scoring with 22 points, but the losing streak against the Blazers continues in a 97-81 loss. Jordan Clarskon had a solid stat line with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, but not even close of an encore that he put up Friday night vs. the Timberwolves. Ivica Zubac rounded out the starters with 10 points and 7 rebounds and Tyler Ennis made good use of some playing time leading the bench with 14 points and 4 steals.

Lakers Prevail in Thrilling OT Win vs. T'Wolves Friday Night

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

On the night Shaq unveiled his statue outside of Staples Center too. Jordan Clarkson exploded for a career high 35 points, along with eight 3-pointers and 5 assists as the Lakers pulled away from the Timberwolves in overtime 119-130. Julius Randle followed, adding yet another double-double to his resume, racking up 23 points and 12 rebounds. D'Angelo Russell added 15 points and Brandon Ingram tallied up 11 points to round out the starters. Larry Nance Jr. lead the bench in scoring with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Corey Brewer, the veteran among the group, followed with 12 points. David Nwaba contributed with some scoring and rebounding off the bench as well, finishing with 10 points and 7 boards.

Oakland Raiders 2017 Free Agency Activity

03/22:

(-)

TE Mychal Rivera - Signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 2-year deal

Comment: As expected, the Raiders let Rivera walk after upgrading the Tight End position by adding Jared Cook. Rivera had solid production for the Raiders throughout his 4 years, despite being criminally underutilized. He'll get more opportunities in Jacksonville if the offense involves the Tight Ends more. I wish him the best.

03/20:

(+)

LB Jelani Jenkins (Last played for the Miami Dolphins) - Signed to an undisclosed deal

Comment: And there it is! The first defensive signing for the Raiders in free agency. This is somewhat of a consolation prize for not signing Zach Brown from the Bills. Jelani Jenkins is a name that I've heard a lot whenever I tune in to Dolphins home games while waiting for the Raiders to play, but I've never had a full grasp on his game. Based on his highlights, he's a pretty solid tackler, especially when playing against the run. He can effectively blow up screen passes to the running back. I've heard he's a liability in pass coverage, but I think he's OK at best based on past highlights. Sure he gets beat, but he doesn't give up on the play to break up the pass. Probably the only concern is his health. He's struggled to play all 16 games since starting for the Dolphins. Raiders found a replacement for Malcolm Smith in Jenkins and he could be an upgrade provided he's able to stay healthy.

LS Jon Condo - Re-signed

Comment: Condo deserves to be a Raider for life. He's been a terrific Long Snapper for the Raiders and really, an integral part in Special Teams.

03/18:

(-)

WR Andre Holmes - Officially signed with the Buffalo Bills

Comment: I don't know what happened considering Holmes first denied he signed a contract with the Bills, but it's on NFLPA documents. Once it's on the dotted line, it's a done deal. The addition of Cordarrelle Patterson pretty much spelled the end for Holmes' tenure with the Raiders. The Bills are getting a big-sized target and a solid special teams player in terms of downing the ball deep. Best of luck to Holmes. I've always liked him ever since he balled out during the dark years when the Raiders were still in Salary Cap Hell.

03/16:

(+)

QB EJ Manuel (last played for the Buffalo Bills) - Will sign to an undisclosed deal

Comment: Most likely if the Raiders are signing a quarterback in free agency, he's likely a camp body to Derek Carr and Connor Cook. Todd Downing did work with Manuel when he was in Buffalo in 2014 and Manuel was having a pretty decent year before ultimately losing the job to Kyle Orton. Camp fodder, not too big of a questionable move.

TE Jared Cook (last played for the Green Bay Packers) - *separate post*

03/15:

(-)

RB Latavius Murray - *separate post*

03/13:

(+)

WR Cordarrelle Patterson (last played for the Minnesota Vikings) - *separate post*

03/10:

(+)

OT Marshall Newhouse (last played for the New York Giants) - Signed to a 2-year deal

Comment: At last the free agency shutout for the Raiders is over. For the fourth consecutive offseason, Reggie McKenzie's first free agent addition is an offensive linemen. Not a move that would sit well with the casual Raider fan pleading for a splash, but Newhouse adds more depth to an already good O-line. It's been awhile since Reggie channeled his Green Bay ties. Newhouse started his career as a Packer and was on the Super Bowl XLV championship team.

(-)

CB D.J. Hayden - Signed with the Detroit Lions to a 1-year $5.25 million deal

Comment: This puts an end to a disastrous experiment. The Raiders drafted Hayden in 2013 to be their best cornerback, but he struggled to stay healthy the first two years. He finally found his niche as a nickel corner last season, but Hayden will always be remembered as the player who would commit pass interference penalties at the worst possible time. He couldn't turn his head around when the ball was flying towards him. Maybe it's the scheme. There's a lot reasons that could be inferred on why D.J. Hayden failed and didn't live up to the first round status. However, I still wish him the best of luck. He's made one heck of a recovery to play pro football after suffering a near-death experience.

OT Menelik Watson - Signed with the Broncos to a 3-year $18.3 million deal

Comment: Really Menelik? Really? The Broncos? I was the Raiders would re-sign, but to a 1-year prove it deal. Watson had all the physical tools to be a solid tackle, but he just couldn't stay on the field. He would've been good for depth purposes. But, 3-years, $18.3 million for an injury-prone tackle? Though the Broncos are getting a good one as long as he stays healthy, that's a pretty hefty price. Bold risk-reward move Elway, let's see how it plays out for you.

S Nate Allen - Signed with the Miami Dolphins

Comment: Like Malcolm Smith, I didn't expect Nate Allen to be back. Though, he did good as a "super-sub" for Karl Joseph and Reggie Nelson at the safety position.

03/09: Day 1 of Free Agency

(-)

DT Stacy McGee - Signed with the Washington Redskins to a 5-year $25 million deal

Comment: I got nothing but love for Stacy McGee. He had a semi breakout year last year, displaying tremendous upside as a pass rushing DT. It's too bad injuries hampered his stellar year. Redskins opened up the wallet to get him and they are getting a quality DT if he stays healthy.

LB Daren Bates and S Brynden Trawick - Signed with the Tennessee Titans

Comment: Wow, talk about a big blow to the special teams unit. Bates signed on to a $6 million deal and Trawick signed to a $3 million deal. I wasn't surprised that Bates was gonna walk, but I wished the Raiders retained Trawick for not just special teams purposes, but also depth purposes at the safety position. The Titans are getting a pair of good ones here.

03/08:

(+)

WR Seth Roberts, TE Gabe Holmes, OL Denver Kirkland - Exclusive Rights Tenders Retained

Comment: Pretty quiet start for Reggie McKenzie and the Raiders front office during the legal tampering period before tomorrow. But clearly there are more priorities during the offseason. Seth Roberts is obviously the big time retention among this trio. He had a case of dropsies last season, but he comes up big in the clutch no matter how you look at it. Hopefully, he polishes his game in the slot in his 3rd year as the Raiders are still gonna run the same system even though Downing is taking over OC duties. Gabe Holmes, solid retention for depth at the Tight End position. Denver Kirkland, undrafted out of last year, is a solid retention for the O-line. He gave the Raiders that extra big body to push around D-linemen.

(-)

LB Malcolm Smith - Agreed to sign with the 49ers

Comment: The writing was on the wall for the former Super Bowl MVP after the 2016. I'm not going to bag on Smith too much because he did have a solid season in 2015. 2016, he struggled mightily, especially when it came to covering opposing Tight Ends.

Lakers Routed by Clippers

*Stats courtesy of Yahoo Sports and NBA.com*

Based on the box score, this game was already over by the first half. Brandon Ingram lead the Lakers in scoring with 21 points to go with 5 rebounds as the Lakers got wiped out by the Clippers 133-109. Julius Randle added 19 points and 7 rebounds, Ivica Zubac added 17 points and 7 rebounds, and D'Angelo Russell only put up 18 points after exploding for 40 against Cleveland Sunday night. Thomas Robinson had surprise playing time, leading the bench with 16 points and 6 rebounds.

D'Angelo Russell Drops 40 Points in Lakers' Loss to Cavaliers

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

That was quite a battle last night between D'Lo and Kyrie. I've said this in the game against the Suns couple back, D'Lo is better when he plays off the ball. No pun intended, but the way Lonzo Ball is playing in the March Madness tournament, most recently in UCLA's win over Cincinnati, the more  I can't stop salivating at a possible Ball-Russell back court. Now, onto this game, D'Angelo Russell is the obvious top performer for the Lakers with 40 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. The Lakers took the Cavs to the limit, but Kyrie Irving's 46 points helped rally the Cavs to a 125-120 victory. The end result hurts, but the Lakers gotta protect that top 3 pick. Jordan Clarkson 19 points and also 6 assists. The starting five were the only players in double figures. Brandon Ingram had 18 points and 6 rebounds, Julius Randle added 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists, and Ivica Zubac added 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Lakers Couldn't Sweep Bucks

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

Looks like the game got ugly late as I read that D'Angelo Russell, Nick Young, and Greg Monroe got into a scuffle and all three got ejected. Jordan Clarkson was the Lakers' leading scorer with 21 points, but the Lakers fell short as the Bucks beat them 107-103 behind Giannis Antetokounmpo's 26 point performance and Khris Middleton's 30 point performance. Ivica Zubac bounced back with 18 points and 8 rebounds, Nick Young finished with 16 points before the ejection, and Brandon Ingram added 11 points to round out the starters. D'Angelo Russell is starting to find his groove off the bench with 14 points before the ejection and Larry Nance Jr. followed closely with 13 points. In other news, Lonzo Ball looked good tonight against Kent State, though he took quite a nasty fall before the end of the 1st half. Yes, I'll be watching UCLA closely throughout March Madness while doing quick recaps on the remaining Laker games.

Raiders, Jared Cook Agree on Contract

It looks like Reggie McKenzie "went to Jared." The Raiders have agreed to sign former Packers Tight End, Jared Cook. Contract details have yet to be revealed and they're in the process of making it official.

This move was bound to happen when Cook scheduled a visit with the Raiders. So far, the Raiders are attacking free agency by addressing the offensive end of the field. They fortified the O-line more by signing Marshall Newhouse from the Giants. Then they followed up with Cordarrelle Patterson and now, Jared Cook. More weapons for Derek Carr and the offense. Cook had his writing on the wall when the Packers signed Martellus Bennett. In exchange, the addition of Jared Cook denotes that the writing is on the wall for Mychal Rivera. Rivera is an unrestricted free agent and the Raiders decided to go for an upgrade. Lee Smith, Clive Walford, and Jared Cook should form a very solid Tight End corps.

Contract Details: 2 years, $12.2 million <= Quite a hefty price for a team-friendly deal, but it could ultimately be an incentive-based deal with the way Reggie's putting these contracts together.

Latavius Murray Signs with the Minnesota Vikings

Some breaking news here tonight and it is not on the Raiders' end, but this is a key loss. It is announced that Latavius Murray has signed with the Minnesota Vikings. The contract details are unknown as of the moment. Murray got the endorsements from Derek Carr and Bruce Irvin to stay, but it seems their efforts fell just short.

Wow. I had a hunch that Tay Train was going to leave. Maybe he would head back home to Florida sign with the Jaguars, and team up with Blake Bortles just like in his Central Florida days. But, this caught me off guard when I found out about it immediately. He visited Minnesota since Tuesday from what I'm researching. I said in my post that if Murray leaves, he's leaving a good situation. Who would leave one of the best O-line in the NFL outside of the Dallas Cowboys to an above-average O-line? Granted, the Vikings did invest in the O-line in free agency, signing guys like Riley Reiff and Mike Remmers. But, it remains to be seen if they'll be as good of a front that the Raiders have Penn, Osemele, Hudson, and Jackson. Not to mention, he'll be playing with Sam Bradford under center. It's to be determined if Teddy Bridgewater would play another down in the NFL. Raider Nation, Murray had good seasons playing behind that O-line, but they were not great. 1,000 yards rushing two seasons ago, 12 rushing TDs last season, but he averaged 4.0 yards per carry during those two seasons. What the Raiders will miss about him though is his ability to catch out of the backfield, his nose for the end zone in goal line situations, and picking up blitzes for Carr. He's a pretty valuable asset at pass protection. Other than that, Tay is replaceable. The Vikings better hope he's not just a product of the Raiders' O-line. I wonder, could Tay's departure be the cue for Adrian Peterson to come to Oakland?

Lakers Get Blown Up By Rockets

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

Lou Williams came to play to get back at the Lakers, 30 points off the bench. Meanwhile Julius Randle was the Lakers' top performer, scoring 32 points (probably his career high, I could be wrong) and 8 rebounds as the Lakers were shellacked by the Rockets 100-139. Only Brandon Ingram and Jordan Clarkson joined Randle in double-figures as Ingram racked up 18 points and 6 rebounds and JC also chipped in 18 points.

Raiders Ink Cordarrelle Patterson

This free agent addition is worthy of a separate post. Last night, the Raiders have signed Vikings' Wide Receiver and Return Specialist, Cordarrelle Patterson. The contract details will be updated when they come out.

Al Davis would smile at this acquisition. Speed kills. The Raiders have not had a solid kickoff returner since Jacoby Ford. Jalen Richard showed some flashes last season, but he's expected to duke it out with DeAndre Washington for #2 RB spot or eventually the #1 spot if Latavius Murray does not re-sign. Patterson can bring the spark back in the special teams unit when the Raiders receive at kickoff. We tend to forget he set the record for a kickoff return for a TD at 109 yards against Green Bay a few years back. As a receiver, he has a lot of upside as a deep threat burner. His receiving stats in Minnesota might be mediocre. However, think about the quarterbacks he's played with: Christian Ponder, Matt Cassel, Sam Bradford, Teddy Bridgewater. Derek Carr is head above shoulders better than those QBs listed. He's gonna get a chance to add deep threat potential to an already stellar receiving corps with Cooper, Crabtree, and Roberts. Patterson's presence will make defenses think twice on putting a high safety on Cooper. This is an outstanding, bargain signing from Reggie McKenzie. Welcome to the Raider Nation, Cordarrelle Patterson!

Lakers Resume Tanking With Loss to Sixers

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

They almost won it though. But of all people who took the last shot, it had to be Randle. Jordan Clarkson had a spectacular game, scoring a season high 30 points to go with 6 rebounds and 8 assists off the bench, but the Lakers fall short to the 76ers 118-116. The tank process is back. Julius Randle lead the starters with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Brandon Ingram added 12 points, D'Angelo Russell added 11 points, and Ivica Zubac made the start at the Center position, finishing with 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Lakers' Young "Sinister Six" Comes Up Big in Win @ Phoenix

Final Score: @ Phoenix 122-110 [W]

Welcome in to the full recap of the Lakers' road matchup vs. the Phoenix Suns where the Lakers snap a long losing streak to defeat the Suns 122-110.

Laker Nation, I want you guys to mark this game down. Remember it. Because what we've seen is the potential when the Lakers play a complete game behind the young players. Russell, Randle, Clarkson, Nance Jr., Ingram, Zubac, they all came to play tonight. Late in the 4th quarter was pretty ugly though. Defensive lapses were apparent yet again. It was like "uh oh, the Lakers are gonna blow another lead in the 4th." But, Clarkson comes up big with a pair of clutch steal and D'Angelo Russell knocks down a dagger three to seal the game. But, still great effort by the six players that headline the youth movement.

(+)

Ivica Zubac, 14 points, 7-13 shooting. Honestly, Luke Walton should consider about starting this man at Center after this game. The Suns were dominating the Lakers in the paint, but Zubac was a one man wrecking crew tonight against the Suns' interior. The soft touch was on display. He's one of the last of a dying breed in the traditional big man.

D'Angelo Russell, 28 points, 10-20 shooting. And people will still be like "trade this man!" This is the cleanest game I've seen from D'Lo. He didn't turn the ball over, he was aggressive when needed to be, and he had the stroke tonight, shooting six 3-pointers. Essentially, consistency and defense are things he need to work on. But, when you looked at his production since the Lou Williams trade, he has taken over the reins. It's just a matter of patience and it's unfortunate that despite the boost in production, some "fans" still want him traded. Yes, he'll piss us off at times. We get it, he's not Kobe. He's D'Angelo Russell.

Brandon Ingram, 14 points, 6 rebounds. I like Reggie Miller's advice on commentary to Ingram, hit the gym and shoot a thousand threes young fella. But, as always I liked Ingram's assertiveness. The kid was on a rack attack tonight, trying to put anybody on a poster. I like that. But, other than that, if he gets the jump shot to go as well as the three point shooting, he's going to reach that Kevin Durant potential.

Larry Nance Jr., 13 points, 8 rebounds. Larry Nance Jr. instilling some of that "Mamba" mentality of playing through a wrist injury. That has gotta be hurting with all the dunks he had and the rebounds tonight. But, that's what he'll do, he'll put his body and soul on the line to bring energy to the Lakers.

Jordan Clarkson, 19 points, 7-18 shooting. Clarkson continues to remain consistent as the Lakers' sixth man since the Lakers traded Lou Williams. He is so much better when he is looking to attack the basket. He had those 2 clutch steals late in the 4th to stop the bleeding because the Suns would've definitely have come back and taken the lead.

Julius Randle, 13 points, 8 rebounds. Speaking of a thousand threes, Randle should think about that too. Honestly, when Randle was settling for the three point shot, I was saying my head "no, that's not your game!" But hey, he hit them and one of those were timely when the Suns were hanging around. He can be better without being so clunky and without playing like a chicken who's lost his head.

(-)

4th quarter defensive lapse. The Suns going on that 11-1 run is the only blemish on the game. What can I say? They've struggled to close games out, especially on the road. Playing a 100% complete game is still a work-in-progress for this young squad.

MVP

D'Angelo Russell, 28 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 10-20 shooting, 6 three pointers

Just let him play and develop. This is what it's about at this point of the season. This is hands down, one D'Lo's best games and one of his cleanest games of the season. He definitely had ice in those veins tonight.

Conclusion

In all honesty, it is pure insanity for the Lakers to trade any of the young core. If Magic likes what he sees from them, then we gotta "trust the process." Okay, maybe we sold high on this game because it's gonna be hard for them to replicate this kind of game. But, that's what makes it part of the growing pains. Let these young guys get experience to polish their game and reach their potential. Like I said, this win tonight serves as a glimpse of what the Lakers could be in the future behind their young talent. Overall, good win and a fantastic game from the six players that hold the key to the Lakers' future. I'll see you guys later.

03/09: Tank Wars! - LAKERS @ Phoenix Suns 2nd Half Open Thread and Discussion

*Sorry, no picture to include in this open thread. I didn't have time to make one as this was a last minute decision.*

Welcome to the first half open thread and discussion of the Lakers' road matchup vs. the Phoenix Suns. Leave a comment below to share your thoughts on the game.

Q4

LAL 122 PHX 110

That defensive lapse almost gave me a heart attack right there. This is hands down the best game the young Lakers have looked all season long. Randle, Russell, Ingram, Clarkson, Nance, Zubac all in double figures and showed the potential on what they can possibly be in the future. This win may have disrupted the tank process for a bit, but I'm privileged to cover this game and witness a complete game, well not quite complete because of the defensive lapse in the 4th quarter. But still, this game is the sound of progression in the development process. Stay tuned for the full recap.

Q3

LAL 90 PHX 81

I've said this privately, it would be a mistake to trade any of the young players. There last few games end up in losses, but with the way they perform, there is a lot of upside. Win or lose after this game, this is arguably the best I've seen from the young squad. D'Lo is showing the scoring prowess. Ingram showing the aggressiveness. Zubac showing the soft touch. Throw in Randle after this quarter, showing he can hustle and not give up on a play. I'm liking this.

03/09: Tank Wars! - LAKERS @ Phoenix Suns 1st Half Open Thread and Discussion

*Sorry, no picture to include in this open thread. I didn't have time to make one as this was a last minute decision.*

Welcome to the first half open thread and discussion of the Lakers' road matchup vs. the Phoenix Suns. Leave a comment below to share your thoughts on the game.

Q2

LAL 61 PHX 63

Clarkson with another last shot to end the quarter. The score is what you'd expect with two young teams jockeying for position at the top 3 spots for the draft. The first half, I liked what I'm seeing from the young Lakers. D'Lo's shot is on point during the half. Ingram struggling with his shot, but still making aggressive moves to the basket. And how about Ivica Zubac during this quarter? Len's block might've had him crashing down, but he was on fire in the post, displaying the soft touch. He offers a glimmer of hope for the traditional, post up big man in a guard driven league. Obviously, Devin Booker and Eric Bledsoe got hot late and that's why the Suns were able to reclaim the lead. This is what you expect from a tanking team. Just make the score close and compete. If the Lakers win tonight, I believe the Suns still have one more win over them, so it shouldn't affect the draft lottery chances. But, overall, I liked what I saw in the first half. Hope it carries on in the second half, which will open up shortly.

Q1

LAL 32 PHX 33

That's a nice way to end the quarter with a three pointer by Jordan Clarkson. Well, this is gonna be a game of who's tanking more. The Suns at one point were leading big. It's like "oh, here we go, the Lakers are going to get blown out in the first quarter." The Lakers were turning the ball over and getting outmuscled in the paint this quarter. But, the threes are hitting early on. D'Lo and B.I. are carrying the team in terms of scoring. The Lakers are being mindful of making this a game and tanking for a top 3 pick at the same time.

Lakers Drop Game to Mavs Again

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

Well, glad to see the Lakers make good use of garbage time and patch up the margin of defeat. Last trip to Dallas was just a pile of excrement. However, they did get dominated in the first three quarters. Julius Randle, double-double machine upgraded to a triple-double machine, being the Lakers' top performer with 13 points, 18 rebounds, and 10 assists in the Lakers' 111-122 loss to the Mavs on a night where Dirk Nowitzki reaches the 30,000 points plateau. D'Angelo Russell lead all starters in scoring with 22 points and Nick Young and Brandon Ingram each had the same amount of point totals as Randle with 13 points. Jordan Clarkson continues his solid sixth man play, scoring 22 points off the bench.

Final Score: @ Dallas 111-122 [L]

Lakers Hire Rob Pelinka as New GM

The Lakers have made it official today by naming Rob Pelinka as the new General Manager for the Lakers. For the uninformed, Pelinka is an agent for a couple of NBA players, but most notably, he was Kobe Bryant's agent. This isn't completely new news. Pelinka to the Lakers was a done deal ever since Magic took over and Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak got the boot. As Harrison Feigen of Silver Screen and Roll says here, this was the worst "kept" secret inside the Laker brass. Now that this is over with, welcome officially to the Lakers Rob Pelinka. With him, along with Magic, Jeanie, and Luke, they will lead an ambitious campaign to return the Lakers to greatness.

Raiders 2017 Free Agency Outlook

"Baby Reg and Big Reg"  (From Bruce Irvin's Instagram account: @bruceirvin51)

It's the most exciting time of the NFL again. The free agency period is upon us and the Raiders are looking to build from last year and become a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Welcome in to the annual Free Agency Outlook post. The layout of this post is going to be a lot different than years past. I'm making this more organized. I'm going to break down the Raiders' salary cap situation, who they should retain, and addressing the team needs that the Raiders need to fill.

Last year, Reggie McKenzie unloaded the Brinks truck and landed four enticing free agents. The acquisitions of Kelechi Osemele and Bruce Irvin were hands down the best additions from last year's free agent class. K.O. brought a mean, nasty presence to the offensive line. The Raiders' offensive line was arguably one of the best O-lines in the league next to the Dallas Cowboys. Bruce Irvin was probably the most surprising acquisitions because the Raiders weren't even considered to land Irvin. But, because Ken Norton Jr. was on the coaching staff, Bruce Irvin followed and added more pass rushing prowess to go alongside Khalil Mack. The additions of Sean Smith and Reggie Nelson were also big, but they didn't quite live up the hype. I thought Smith played much better as the season progressed, despite being hampered by a shoulder injury. Reggie Nelson, as much as he sealed a lot of games with clutch INTs, he was out of position and gave up a couple of big plays. Hopefully they're much better in Year 2 since the Raiders didn't give KNJ the boot and John Pagano's addition could have them play to their strengths. Nonetheless, the Raiders were big winners and these acquisitions finally got them over a 14 year hump of no postseason action.

Raiders' Salary Cap:

The numbers are in and the Raiders have $48 million to spend for the 2017 free agency period. Pending in-house roster cuts, that number can increase. I think that kind of cap space is enough to land at least one or two key free agents. Of course, they have Derek Carr's contract extension looming and his contract extension could eat up half of that cap space. Also, Latavius Murray is a top-priority free agent to re-sign and he could be looking for more money. For Reggie McKenzie, this free agency period is going to be his biggest test since he drafted all this talent and now he has to play "keep as many as you can." At the same time, he has to address roster holes and pieces that could put the Raider in Super Bowl contention.

Must Re-Sign:

1) Latavius Murray

This is a no-brainer on who's a priority to re-sign. Tay Train didn't follow up from his 1,000+ yards rushing two seasons ago, but he found the end zone 12 times this season. He's not the prototypical elite running back that all run-first teams covet. His indecisiveness can sometimes be frustrating. But all the little things that Murray has done is what makes him underrated. He's a very capable pass catcher out of the backfield. He can pick up the blitz and pass protect. He has a nose for the end zone in goal line situations with his big, physical abilities. If Murray leaves, he's leaving behind a good situation. He won't find a team with as good of an O-line than he has currently with the Raiders. Well, unless he goes to the Dallas Cowboys given they have a great O-line, but he's going to play second fiddle to Ezekiel Elliott. If he's demanding a lot of money, it's going to hurt, but it's business and Reggie McKenzie will find a replacement in the free agent market or in the draft. I hear Adrian Peterson is calling, but question is, will he take a pay cut? Nonetheless, Murray needs to be re-signed and hopefully, his agent sets a reasonable and realistic price on him.

2) Menelik Watson

Menelik Watson had all the physical tools to be a solid offensive tackle. However, he just couldn't stop himself from getting hurt. I could understand the pro of letting him go because he couldn't stay healthy. The Raiders' Right Tackle position has been a revolving door all season long since Watson went down with yet another injury. Reggie McKenzie could do the same thing to Watson what he did to Darren McFadden in 2014. He could sign Watson to a 1-year bargain deal. The Raiders have to stock up depth at the Tackle position since Donald Penn is getting older, Austin Howard is serviceable at best, and Vadal Alexander isn't quite polished yet with his pass blocking. Re-signing Watson is a cheap deal to shore up depth at the Tackle position.

3) Jon Condo

I'm going to be honest, I didn't know Jon Condo was going to be an unrestricted free agent this year. Condo has been the Raiders' consistent Long Snapper since he was drafted. It would be nice if the Raiders retained their special teams trio consisting of Condo, Marquette King, and Sebastian Janikowski.

Team needs:

1) Interior Pass Rush

Mario Edwards Jr.'s hip injury last season proved to be devastating for the Raiders' interior pass rush in the middle. It's part of the big reason why they had one of the fewest sack totals in the league despite Mack and Irvin's presence off the edge. Quarterbacks can easily step into the pocket and throw because the DTs couldn't provide the push up the middle to create pressure. Jihad Ward was thrown into the fire to try and alleviate MEJ's absence, but it proved to be a daunting task for the Illinois rookie. As a result, the Raiders' set a lot of records for giving up a lot of yards. The health of MEJ is going to be a concern going forward. Calais Campbell of the Arizona Cardinals has been associated with the Raiders and I think he's going to be a tremendous addition for the defense. Reggie McKenzie and Jack Del Rio love versatile linemen and the Raiders are likely shifting to a 3-4 defense with the addition of John Pagano. This move makes a lot of sense. Campbell's addition could take pressure off of MEJ and Ward. Two hurdles though: 1) Campbell is in his 30's and 2) he's likely looking for a big payday. Still, just imagine the sight of a possible NASCAR formation with Khalil Mack, Calais Campbell, Mario Edwards Jr., Aldon Smith, and Bruce Irvin rushing at QBs.

2) Inside Linebacker

From Nick Roach to Curtis Lofton to Ben Heeney to Cory James to Perry Riley Jr., the Raiders can't afford to play musical chairs at the ILB position anymore. They need someone who could be that every down linebacker to "quarterback" the defense, play the run, and cover. Zach Brown of the Buffalo Bills is the ideal free agent that the Raiders should pursue to fill that position, especially since they're likely to run more 3-4 defensive schemes. Brown had a Pro Bowl breakout year last year, playing under Rex Ryan's 3-4 defense for the Bills. He'll likely demand a lot of money, but if he doesn't, the more the merrier. The plus side of getting Zach Brown is that because the Raiders play the AFC East next season, they could benefit from his familiarity playing in that division.

3) Offensive Tackle

The Raiders can never have too many bodies on the offensive line. If you looked at the past three seasons since Reggie McKenzie cleaned up the salary cap situation, the first thing he would address is the offensive line. He missed big time with Roger Saffold, but he hit the last two seasons with Rodney Hudson and Kelechi Osemele. Donald Penn is getting older, but I think K.O. will eventually take over the Left Tackle spot. However, Right Tackle was a mess last season.  As mentioned, Menelik Watson couldn't stay healthy. Austin Howard is serviceable at best. Vadal Alexander and Denver Kirkland are not polished yet to start at the position. The Raiders could try and pry another O-lineman away from Baltimore by adding Ricky Wagner. Pro Football Focus ranks Wagner as the 36th best free agent in the market heading into the 2017 offseason. He's an OK run blocker, but pass protection is where he excels at and that was something the Raiders lacked on the right side. Defensive Coordinators knew that the right side was weak, so they put their premier pass rushers to Austin Howard's side.

4) Run Stuffing DT

The Raiders' run defense shockingly regressed last season, dipping down to the 23rd ranked run defense in the league. Dan Williams had weight issues to start the season and that negatively affected his play as a run-stuffing DT. Dontari Poe of the Chiefs and Brandon Williams of the Ravens are sexier pick up to fill this gap. However, Bennie Logan of the Philadelphia Eagles can be a smart, under-the-radar option to fill this gap. Bennie Logan was ranked as one of league's best run defenders among 4-3 DTs and 3-4 NTs according to Pro Football Focus. The guy is explosive when it comes to shooting the gaps and tackling a running back for a loss. The one knack is that he's not as good of a pass rusher in a 3-4 compared to a 4-3, but he's a solid, younger upgrade over Dan Williams in terms of stopping the run and providing some push up the middle. Plus side, the Raiders play the NFC East next season, so they could definitely use Logan's familiarity in playing in that division.

5) Safety

The Raiders don't have much safety help outside of Karl Joseph and Reggie Nelson. Nate Allen is likely going to walk to another team. Brynden Trawick had a small sample size during the Week 17 game @ Denver in which he played really good. Trawick would be a smart re-sign for special teams purposes and for safety depth. But, Tony Jefferson of the Cardinals is now an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The Raiders had Jefferson on the radar last season, but he was a restricted free agent and the Cardinals would've matched whatever offer the Raiders came up with. The Raiders can chase after him without any restrictions. Jefferson can be a long-term replacement when Reggie Nelson's contract is up. "J&J Security" has a nice ring to a possible tandem of Karl Joseph and Tony Jefferson for the last line of defense.

Conclusion

Obviously, not all of these team needs will be address immediately in the free agency period. These are all ideal free agents to address team needs for the Raiders. With the cap space, I think the Raiders can land at least one big time free agent and re-sign Murray while being mindful of Derek Carr's impending extension. The Raiders will likely focus on in-house and once they sign a big free agent, they'll start doing some sneaky solid signings, kinda like 2015. Rodney Hudson was the big time addition and they followed with smart, bargain signings with Malcolm Smith, Lee Smith, Roy Helu, Dan Williams, Curtis Lofton, and Michael Crabtree. What they should focus most importantly is which free agent will take them to become legitimate Super Bowl contenders. The big thing is that the Raiders don't have to beg for free agents to come anymore. The free agents have to beg for them to come to the Silver and Black. It should be an interesting free agency period. As usual, I'll provide a post that'll record all of the Raiders' transactions and provide separate posts for the big splashes. I'll see you guys on March 9 when the new NFL year starts.

Lakers Keep Tanking vs. Pelicans

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

Well, I kinda wish the Lakers won this one because it would've been hilarious if the Pelicans remained win-less since trading for DeMarcus Cousins. But, trust the tank process. Nick Young lead all Lakers in scoring with 19 points and four 3-pointers, but the Lakers gotta tank as they fall short against the Pelicans 105-97. Brandon Ingram had a bounce-back game after dropping a goose egg Friday night against Boston, racking up 16 points. D'Angelo Russell, despite committing 6 turnovers tonight finished with 16 points and 7 assists. Jordan Clarkson's streak of coming off the bench and finishing with double-figure point totals continues as he chipped in 14 points.

Final Score: vs. New Orleans 105-97 [L]

Lakers Hammered by Celtics

*Stats Courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

Trust the tank process. Jordan Clarkson lead the Lakers off the bench, scoring 20 points to go with 4 rebounds and 3 assists, but this game was pretty much over by the third quarter as the Lakers fall to the Celtics 115-95. D'Angelo Russell was the leading scorer in the starting lineup with 17 points and Julius Randle added 13 points to go with 7 rebounds.
