Raiders Rounds 4-7 Wrap Up + Concluding Thoughts

The final day of the 2017 NFL Draft has concluded. At this point, teams draft for depth, special teams, or if they get lucky, they might find a potential steal in the long run. I'll provide my research on the Raiders' draft picks in the last four rounds and give my concluding thoughts in evaluating the overall draft.

Round 4 - Pick 129: David Sharpe, OL, Florida

The Raiders decided to take a break from defensive draft picks and give a little love for offense. There is nothing wrong with having too many big bodies to stack up that O-line depth. The thing that is striking about David Sharpe, his pro comparison, Vadal Alexander. Sharpe is a mountain of a man, weighing at 343 pounds. He was a solid left tackle at Florida, protecting Jack Del Rio's son, Luke, who's the Gators' quarterback. He's everything that the Raiders value in their O-line. They want big, physical linemen that can push people around. And like Vadal Alexander, he's not too quick footed. More linemen for Mike Tice to coach to full potential. From his draft profile, he was slated to be a 2nd-3rd rounder. Nice steal from Reggie McKenzie in the 4th round to keep fortifying that "Carr Insurance."

Round 5 - Pick 168: Marquel Lee, LB, Wake Forest

We've been clamoring for more help at the linebacker position and the Raiders addressed that in the 5th round. This is an ongoing trend for Reggie McKenzie and the Raiders. They get their linebackers in the later rounds. There's not a lot of encouraging reports that he could be the "Mike" that the Raiders need. He's a big linebacker, but he doesn't have the athleticism to cover sideline-to-sideline. His reaction time is late in passing situations. He excels more in playing the run based on his highlights, which most scouting reports pointed out when evaluating his game. Marquel Lee is going to be another "work-in-progress" for the Raiders. You can bet there will be serious competition between Marquel Lee, Ben Heeney (although Heeney is probably the odd-man out), and Cory James to fill that Inside Linebacker position.

Round 7 - Pick 221 (Trade down with Arizona Cardinals): Shalom Luani, S, Washington State

Now, this is a name that I've come across Raider Nation forums the past few weeks. This guy made a name for himself as a football (soccer) star for American Samoa. For a player whose first name means "peace," he plays the game the way it should be, aggressive and violent. Luani is a big hitter at the Safety position. It was like I was seeing a reflection of Karl Joseph when I saw Luani's highlights for the first time. Great selection to pretty much solidify back end of the secondary for the future.

Round 7 - Pick 231 (Trade down with Arizona Cardinals): Jylan Ware, OL, Alabama State

You can never have too many big bodies on the Offensive Line. The Raiders drafted a big, athletic offensive tackle here with their second 7th round pick acquired in a trade with the Cardinals. Ware is very quick footed according to his draft profile. He has one trait that Mike Tice values: quick footed linemen. He just needs to put on a little more weight as he weighs at 295 pounds. Most of the Raiders' big, powerful linemen stand at 300 lbs or more. Solid depth for days at the Offensive Line position.

Round 7 - Pick 242: Elijah Hood, RB, North Carolina

From the same GM that drafted Latavius Murray at Pick 181 overall in 2013, comes this sequel. When I looked at this guy's highlights, he's eerily similar to Tay Train. He's a big back who has adequate speed and acceleration. Hood stands at 6'0 while Murray has a 6'3 frame. There's a 3 inch difference between the two. The thing that stood out about his highlight tape is that he lowers his head and shoulders to absorb the contact. Murray could not do that and is easily taken down because of that very reason. He has a strength in pass protection. Elijah Hood will make us forget about Murray as a back with a nose for the first down/touchdown line and picking up blitzes for Carr. He can be a good long-term stash with Marshawn Lynch being a stop gap RB.

Round 7 - Pick 244: Treyvon Hester, DT, Toledo

The Raiders addressed more help at the DT position. Treyvon Hester is a rotational piece to spare Justin Ellis, Darius Latham, and Eddie Vanderdoes. He's another run stuffing DT. His tape against Temple flashed his potential as a DT who can provide some push in the pocket and shed blocks from offensive linemen.

Conclusion

Overall, the draft strategy is what you'd expect from Reggie McKenzie and the Oakland Raiders. They focused most of their draft picks on defense. Gareon Conley and Obi Melifonwu revamps the secondary. We might be looking at a solid, young secondary corps consisting Gareon Conley and Obi Melifonwu to pair with and 2nd year man Karl Joseph and veteran, David Amerson. I liked the Shalom Luani pick in the 7th round to solidify depth at the Safety position. They get a running back late again, selecting Elijah Hood. He should fill in Latavius Murray's shoes rather quickly and he'll get the benefit of a doubt being mentored by Beast Mode. Eddie Vanderdoes in the 3rd and Trevon Hester in the 7th round addresses voids at the DT position left behind by Dan Williams and Stacy McGee. David Sharpe and Jylan Ware fortify an already loaded elite Offensive Line. Marquel Lee adds more competition to the linebackers corps. Reggie McKenzie did another solid job putting this draft together and addressed 90% of the key defensive deficiencies. I personally would've liked a long-term Middle Linebacker that can cover Tight Ends, but we'll probably see the Raiders more in Nickel packages as Obi Melifonwu is capable of covering Tight Ends with his size and athleticism. We know Gareon Conley is under ongoing investigation of a supposed sexual assault case. But, he's complying with Police and he took a polygraph test and passed. After seeing his highlights, Conley should be a big time upgrade over D.J. Hayden. With this, Reggie addressed the secondary and he beefed up the O-line and D-line with more quality depth.

Raiders Rounds 2-3 Wrap Up

Day 2 of the 2017 NFL Draft is in the books. The Raiders make their selections and I provide my take on the prospects.

Round 2 - Pick 56: Obi Melifonwu, S, UConn

"I've been waiting for you Obi-Wan. We meet again at last. The circle is now complete." Sorry, I had to throw out a Star Wars reference out there because of the first name. Anyway, outside of Karl Joseph and Reggie Nelson, the Raiders don't have much help at the Safety position and they need to consider a long term replacement for Nelson. They might've found that with this selection. When I think of this pick, I immediately think Kam Chancellor. "Obi-Wan" is a big safety with freakish athleticism. This highlight video shows that he's a pretty solid open field tackler. He possesses some good motor and good close out speed to make the tackle. He also shows some pretty good fundamentals wrapping rather than laying out the big hit. It should be no surprise that he'll be a starter next year once Reggie Nelson's contract is up. The tandem of KuJo (Joseph) and Obi-Wan has a lot of potential to be a nice Safety tandem in the forseeable future.

Round 3 - Pick 88: Eddie Vanderdoes, DT, UCLA

The Raiders let Stacy McGee go to the Redskins. They cut Dan Williams late in the offseason. Not a lot of depth at Defensive Tackle outside of Justin Ellis and Darius Latham and they addressed that here with the 3rd round. This pick is like a repeat of Mario Edwards, Jr. He's very athletic and has some solid motor to make a defensive play. He has problems with keeping his weight down. Those are the same pros and cons that Mario Edwards, Jr. had when he was drafted in the 2nd round two years ago. There's a lot of upside and potential with this pick. Vanderdoes fills a need at the DT position. The Raiders needed a "big boy" with football that can stuff the run and potentially push the pocket. Yes, 2.5 career sacks at UCLA does not spell him as an interior rusher. But with some coaching and conditioning, this guy could eat up blocks to free up Mack and Irvin in passing down situations.

Raiders 2017 NFL Draft Round 1 Wrap Up

Pick #24: Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State

Day 1 of the 2017 NFL Draft is off the books and the hottest draft prospects have been selected. The Raiders made their first round choice and selected Gareon Conley out of Ohio State. Now, this was quite a surprise pick by Reggie McKenzie. Although, a lot of mock drafts had the Raiders going after a corner at #24 overall. From what I heard, the overall consensus was that Tre'Davious White out of LSU was going to be the pick. I personally thought that Raiders should've gotten a linebacker that could be their long-term defensive signal caller like a Zach Cunningham out of Vanderbuilt. But regardless, their first round pick needed to be an unequivocal prospect on defense.

Back to this surprise selection by Reggie McKenzie, coming into this draft, Conley had red flags written all over him. Most notably, Conley is under investigation of sexual assault and he might not play a down pending a DNA test that may or may not subject him to lengthy jail time. Based on the draft profile from NFL.com, Conley was graded a bit higher than Tre'Davious White. Although, 0.01 difference, so what? Conley is a size-length corner that can play man press or off. Keep in mind, the Raiders value these kinds of corners and on the plus side, Conley has range to be a playmaking corner because of his athleticism. I'd say consistency is going to be key for Conley. Based on this breakdown, there are times where he doesn't jam his receiver, allowing the receiver a little bit of separation to make a play. So, definitely his play as an off corner needs work, but he's a lot better as a press corner. He has some shutdown potential; he allowed a 37% completion rate in Ohio State according to his draft profile. He draws some comparisons to Aqib Talib, which is encouraging. Ultimately, this is a high risk, high reward for the Raiders. The upside and potential is there. However, red flags are overshadowing this promising talent. I'm sure Big Reg (Reggie McKenzie) and Captain Jack (Jack Del Rio) consulted with Mark Davis about this kid and they did their due diligence before they drafted him. Welcome to the Raider Nation, Gareon Conley! Let's hope you're better than the last cornerback who the Raiders drafted in the first round. *Cough.* D.J. Hayden! *Cough.*

Now Official: Marshawn Lynch is an Oakland Raider

Let's try this again. And no, that picture to the right is not Photoshopped. Beast Mode was in the house at the Raiders' HQ in Alameda today. The Raiders and Seahawks made it official today by drawing up a trade that would send Lynch home to play in Oakland and the Raiders didn't have to give up too much. The Raiders send their 2018 5th round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Marshawn Lynch and a 6th round pick. In addition, the Raiders ink Lynch to a 1-year deal that could be extended to a possible 2-year deal worth $8.5 million if Lynch reaches some incentives.

I've said it in the previous post that all signs point to this as a done deal. It took a lot of back and forth between the Raiders and Seahawks, but they managed to get a reasonable deal done. I heard on NFL Network that the original deal was that the Seahawks would send their 26th pick of this year's draft and Marshawn Lynch to the Raiders in exchange for the Raiders' 24th pick. Luckily, that didn't fall through, so the Raiders stand pat in their current position. I'll stand pat in my concerns about Lynch in the previous post 1) he's on the downside of 30, 2) football shape after being off one year, and 3) the transition from a zone blocking scheme in Seattle to a power blocking scheme in Oakland. But, Lynch's one-year retirement helps him take off some wear and tear and he's running behind one of the best O-lines in the league outside of the Cowboys. The Raiders get their bruiser out of the back field to take this offense to top-tier next season. Finally, welcome to the Raider Nation and welcome back to the NFL Beast Mode!

A Season in Review: 2016-17 Lakers

Alright Laker Nation, welcome in to the annual "Season in Review" post for the 2016-17 Los Angeles Lakers. Thank you guys for waiting patiently as I put this together. Like many previous "Season in Review" posts, I give a condensed summary on the entire 82-game season and address offseason needs and who I think the Lakers should draft should they retain the top 3 pick.

To reiterate on this season, this was the official "Year 1" of the rebuilding process. This was a season where we wanted to see the young players grow and develop. Brandon Ingram, D'Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle, Larry Nance Jr., and Ivica Zubac headlined a promising young core for the Lakers' future. In the beginning of the season, the Lakers looked like a surprise team, notching notable wins against the Houston Rockets and their high-powered offense during opening night and against the Golden State Warriors super squad in early November. They were off to a .500 start under Luke Walton and shocking the NBA world early on. Then, injuries and inconsistency got in the way and they couldn't figure out how to win a road game. And ultimately, the team went into tank mode for the top 3 pick. Though, they did went on that 5-game win streak at the end of the season in what was a subliminal audition for the players to convince Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka that they deserve a roster spot. Players such as Tyler Ennis, Thomas Robinson, Tarik Black, David Nwaba, and the veteran Corey Brewer all gave 100% effort during those games.

Evaluating the young players, Jordan Clarkson was arguably the most consistent out of the bunch. JC provided double-figure scoring as a bench player and as a starter. Nance Jr., despite the injuries, established himself as the "sparkplug" of the team with his hustle and energy. Ivica Zubac had a small sample size, but he looked good for the most part, outplaying overpaid Timofey Mozgov. Julius Randle, stuffed the stats sheet in the points and rebounds category like last year, but he still needs to clean up his out-of-control play and defense. D'Angelo Russell, it was a tale of two halves for him. Before the Lou Williams trade, D'Lo was off to a slow start and didn't see the floor whenever Sweet Lou went on a scoring run. Since the trade, D'Lo played a lot better and later in the season, we've found out the he was better suited playing as a Shooting Guard. Vice versa, Brandon Ingram went through a similar stage. Luke Walton didn't want to give him the reins yet and started Luol Deng at Small Forward. Ingram was terrible to start and that's what you'd expect out of a rookie, he'll struggle. But, I was impressed to see his improvement in the 2nd half of the season. He shrugged off the hesitation and started to trust his jump shot and trust his ability to attack the basket more. Ingram's barely scratched his ceiling and he'll get better from here on out. There's a lot of room for improvement for the Lakers' young core. I was fortunate to cover the March 9 game against the Suns. If there's any indication on the potential of this young core, that game was the one because all six players finished in double figures, playing their most complete game in their young careers.

The major headline about this offseason going forward is that the Lakers' future is going to be in the hands of Jeanie Buss, Magic Johnson, and Rob Pelinka. There's a lot of uncertainty on the players' future on this team. If it were up to me, I wouldn't break up this young core. I'd give it one more year before the Lakers start trading some of their young assets. Once their rookie deals are up, they'll likely demand a big payday and the Lakers like many other teams can't keep them all. As for the other players on this roster, I liked the efforts from David Nwaba, Tyler Ennis, Thomas Robinson, and Tarik Black, but obviously they need better upgrades over those players. I personally think Corey Brewer is a keeper because he plays hard and he's been a fantastic veteran presence since he arrived in L.A. The Lakers have to find a way to get rid of Luol Deng and Timofey Mozgov's big contracts. I liked their additions as veterans, but their contracts were highly questionable. The best scenario is to get them both to restructure their deals if they want to continue to provide veteran mentoring to this team. I don't see Nick Young coming back. Metta World Peace hinted that the Lakers would not bring him back. Although, I would love to see MWP as an assistant coach and coach this young team to play better defense. The Lakers were preparing him for that gig since he came back last year. As for the draft, the Lakers have the third worst record, so they're on the borderline of keeping the top 3 pick or losing it to Philadelphia. We've seen crazy things happen in the draft lottery, so the Lakers have hope of getting the #1 pick over Phoenix and Brooklyn. Lonzo Ball impressed me during March Madness, but this draft is wide open for teams in need of a franchise Point Guard.

In closing, there's a lot of talent with untapped potential on this current Lakers squad. As fans, we have to continue to let this process play out. As I said, this season was the official "Year 1" of the Lakers' rebuilding project. I'm not going to count the last three seasons as they were desperate attempts to field a "win-now" team for Kobe Bryant, which backfired miserably. The young core will continue to put in the work. I have great confidence that Jeanie Buss, Magic Johnson, Rob Pelinka, and Luke Walton will work cohesively and lay out a stable foundation in bringing the Lakers back to prominence. Thank you for following my coverage of the Lakers' 2016-17 season. Here's to more positive progress in 2017-18!

#BeastModetoOakland: Marshawn Lynch to Unretire; Agrees to Terms With Raiders

This has been building up over the past month. The return of Beast Mode! Marshawn Lynch called it quits after the 2015 season, but he's been teasing a return, not as a Seahawk, but as an Oakland Raider! Today, multiple sources reported that the Raiders and Marshawn Lynch have agreed to terms of a contract. It's almost close. But, the hurdle is that the Seahawks still own his rights, so the Raiders will have to package a deal to make this trade official.

Reggie...freakin'...Fridays. The suspense has been killing us over the past month and it is so close to reality. As I mentioned, there are reports that both parties agreed, but the Raiders still have to package a trad deal since the Seahawks still have his rights. But, all signs point to this as a done deal. Reggie McKenzie, John Schneider, GM of the Seahawks, have a very close relationship since their Green Bay days. The trade negotiations should fall through smoothly barring any unforeseen circumstances. The Raiders were in need of a power back since Latavius Murray signed with the Vikings and they just found an instant big time upgrade in Lynch. Of course, there's gonna be concerns. 1) Lynch is in his 30's and running backs in their 30's slow down because of the wear and tear. 2) He was out of football for a year, so football shape comes into question. 3) The Seahawks ran a Zone-Blocking Scheme in which Lynch excelled at, how will he fare in a Power Blocking Scheme? To counterpoint, Lynch is coming out of retirement fresh and fully recovered and he's running behind one of the NFL's top Offensive Lines. In addition, he's adding another dimension to an already high octane offense. If this trade falls through, the Raiders are going to be very hard to stop when the offense takes the field. Expect a whole lot of defensive selections in the draft. I wouldn't be surprised if all 7 rounds centered around defense. With that said, even though the writing is not on the wall yet, "the Black Hole has a Beast inside." Welcome back to the NFL and welcome to the Raider Nation, Marshawn Lynch!

Lakers Finish Regular Season With Loss to Warriors

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

The five game win streak was fun while it lasted. Larry Nance Jr. recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with 3 steals, but the Lakers couldn't finish the season with a 6-game win streak, falling to the playoff-ready Warriors 94-109. All starters were in double figures. Jordan Clarkson was the top scorer with 17 points. Tyler Ennis added 14 points, starting in place of D'Angelo Russell. Julius Randle notched 13 points and 8 rebounds and Brandon Ingram tallied up 11 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals to round out the starters.

Lakers Notch Fifth Win in a Row vs. Pelicans

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

Throwback performance from Metta World Peace tonight! MWP started in place of D'Angelo Russell (RIP to D'Lo's grandma) and was the Lakers' top performer with 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals in the 96-108 win over the Pelicans. Jordan Clarkson and Brandon Ingram tied with 15 points and Ingram further stuffed the stat sheet with 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Julius Randle and Larry Nance Jr. switched places as Randle quietly racked up 11 points starting at Center. David Nwaba lead the Lakers off the bench with 14 points and T-Rob followed with 10 points and 5 rebounds.

D'Lo Hits Game Winning Three vs. Timberwolves, Lakers Extend Win Streak

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

D'Lo's got ice in his veins! I caught on with the conclusion of the game and the Staples Center roof would've exploded if MWP made that three for the lead (almost reminded me of the dagger 3 he hit in Game 7 vs. the Celtics in 2010). He missed. Luckily Randle gets a key offensive rebound, kicks it to D'Lo and the ball bounced back into the rim. Crazy ending. But, in a meaningless game, it's not going to sit well for the "pro-tankers." Relax, they're still on the border for that Top 3 pick. Now, let's get to the stats. Lakers might've found a gem in Tyler Ennis. Ennis was the Lakers' top scorer, pouring in probably his career high with 20 points to go with 5 assists off the bench in the Lakers' 109-110 win over the T'Wolves. Onto the starters, Jordan Clarkson lead the unit in scoring with 17 points. D'Angelo Russell had an off night, but finished with 16 points and as mentioned, hit the game winner to lift the Lakers to victory. Julius Randle added 13 points and 8 rebounds, Brandon Ingram racked up 10 points, and Larry Nance Jr. added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Lakers Edge Out Kings

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

And there's three in a row, much to the dismay of people all-in on the tank job. Julius Randle poured in 25 points to go with 6 rebounds as the Lakers held on to a 94-98 win over the Kings. Three other Lakers joined Randle in double-figures. D'Angelo Russell returned to lineup, chipping in 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Brandon Ingram racked up 14 points and Jordan Clarkson added 12 points to go with 6 assists.

Lakers Gain Big Upset Over Spurs

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

As I'm hearing, the Lakers opened up a 40-14 lead over the Spurs in tonight's game. The Lakers put the clamps on a Spurs team at full strength early on! This is not a drill! Either the Spurs were really off their game or Gregg Popovich gave the Lakers a favor and threw the game away tonight. Talk about a huge surprise. Tyler Ennis flashed in his first start in place of D'Angelo Russell, leading the Lakers with 19 points, 6 assists, and 2 steals in the Lakers' 102-95 win over the Spurs. Jordan Clarkson was in a mini funk the last two games, but bounced back tonight with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Larry Nance Jr. continues to eat at Center, notching a near double-double of 15 points and 9 rebounds and Julius Randle, the double-double machine fell two rebounds short of a double-double with 11 points and 8 rebounds. David Nwaba continues to flash solid potential off the bench, notching 10 points and 5 rebounds.

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*
Good way to handle a back-to-back set. D'Angelo Russell has played terrible the last two games, but had a strong showing today, leading the Lakers to a 103-108 victory over the Grizzlies with 28 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Julius Randle scored another double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Brandon Ingram also had another solid outing with 13 points and Larry Nance Jr. started in place of Zubac, notching a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Thomas Robinson has been solid as of late off the bench and that trend continued as T-Rob finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Ennis followed with 11 points off the bench.

Lakers Lose to Clippers Yet Again

*Stats courtesy of NBA.com and Yahoo Sports*

Thomas Robinson was the Lakers' top performer recording a near double-double of 16 points and 9 rebounds off the bench in the Lakers' 104-115 loss to the Clippers. David Nwaba was the top scorer off the bench with 19 points. Not bad for a player who's best known for his defense. He also had 6 rebounds. For the starters, the back court of D'Lo and JC struggled, but Brandon Ingram returned with a solid stat line of 18 points and 5 rebounds. Julius Randle added 14 points and 6 rebounds to round out the starters.
