A Season in Review: 2014 Raiders

What’s up Raider Nation, welcome in to the annual “Season in Review” post for the 2014 Oakland Raiders. In these posts, I usually reflect back on the season from the offseason to the regular season, the games, and what the team needs to do in the impending offseason.

Another year, another season in the books; to sum up the season in general: what began as an offseason of optimism; turned into a nightmare for us Raider fans in the regular season. Reggie McKenzie fielded a team with a lot of veterans, bringing in guys like Justin Tuck, Antonio Smith, Donald Penn, James Jones, Maurice Jones-Drew, LaMarr Woodley, Tarell Brown, Carlos Rogers in the free agency, trading for Matt Schaub. Those moves made us optimistic considering the difficulty of the schedule the team received. We thought this Raider team would be much more competitive than the past Raider teams. Then, Reggie fielded a spectacular draft, adding key cornerstones for the future: Khalil Mack, Derek Carr, Gabe Jackson, Justin Ellis, Keith McGill, T.J. Carrie. All those rookies saw some significant playing time on the field. Carr overtook Schaub after the Seahawks preseason game and that gave us a glimmer of hope, a glimpse of the future.

Week 1, the Raiders headed to the East Coast against the Jets. It was a tightly contested game till the Jets pulled away in the 2nd half. Derek Carr had an OK game for his 1st regular season start. He did feel the pressure from Rex Ryan’s defensive schemes, but overall the Raiders managed to fall short on a five point loss. There was optimism going forward that Carr will get better and the team is still gelling and will eventually come together. Then, the Houston Texans came around for the home opener and surprisingly, they took a massive dump all over us. It’s no surprise though since then QB of the Texans, Ryan Fitzpatrick plays at his best against the Raiders given his track record against them. Week 3 against the Patriots at Gillette Stadium, I saw this as a symbolic game for the Raiders. We still have the Tuck Rule in our heads right? I felt that if the Raiders pulled off a victory against the Patriots, not only would they wake up the football world, but that would be the game that signifies a reversal of fortunes for both franchises. After that faithful game, the Patriots have fielded a winning record plus a couple of Super Bowl titles while the Raiders have been on a free fall ever since with no end in sight. I had that feeling that this was the game to win; this was the game to break the jinx of 12 years of utter BS. The Raiders kept it close. They had that TD from McFadden, and then it gets called back due to a holding call on Gabe Jackson. Patriots held on for the victory after Derek Carr’s pass ricocheted off of Denarius Moore’s hands (typical), into Vince Wilfork’s hands for the INT. The disparity continued on as the Patriots would later go on a hot streak and the Raiders continued to free fall throughout the season. Week 4, the Raiders headed to London for a home game and it just couldn’t get any worse. Despite the Raiders heading there early and the Dolphins heading there late, the Dolphins still managed to give the Raiders a beatdown despite the fact Joe Philbin and Ryan Tannehill were in hot water. That loss put extreme heat on Dennis Allen heading into the bye. I wanted him gone; the rest of the Raider Nation wanted him gone. We couldn’t stand his emotionless face on the sidelines and his “uhs” and “umms” every post game, lacking an honest answer as to why the team was getting their butts handed to them on a silver platter every Sunday. We just had enough. Then finally the day after, Reggie McKenzie, Mark Davis, the Raider organization relieved Dennis Allen of his head coaching duties and it was a sigh of relief that this failure of an experiment was over with. Worst head coach since Lane Kiffin and Art Shell combined.

So with Dennis Allen out of the picture, Tony Sparano comes in and takes over as the interim head coach. Under Sparano, there was drastic improvement after the bye from the practice schedules to the play calling (still predictable though). The Raiders hung in games tough, but there was still no win in sight. In Sparano’s first game as coach, Derek Carr had the best game of his career against the Chargers Week 5, throwing for 300+ yards and 4 TDs, but his costly INT with the game on the line marred his performance. A few games after that, the Raiders are still standing 0-10. It looked like 0-16 was imminent, which would’ve put a damp on this franchise more with over a decade of frustration and brutality from us fans. Finally, they were able to field a win on Thursday Night against the hated Chiefs and that was a perfect storm to get a win. The Chiefs were coming off a win against the Seahawks; it was a short week, perfect set up for a “trap game” and it worked. What I got from the pattern, is that they win a close one at home, the only decisive home win was against our Bay Area rival, 49ers, then the next game on the road, the Raiders get blown out of the water by the Rams, the Chiefs in Kansas City, and the Broncos. That’s the perfect summary I can make up as the season was about to wind down. After that Denver game, the Raiders finished 3-13, another losing season and more frustration. But those 3 wins were good wins: divisional rival Chiefs, Bay Area rival 49ers, and old AFL rival, Bills. What do those teams have in common? They were all playing for their playoff lives and the Raiders put a damp on each team’s playoff hopes. Which win was sweeter? Of course the Battle of the Bay game because it was for pride and it was personal for me considering I live in Santa Clara, which is heavy 49er territory of course. In a lost season, we get to brag about owning the Bay till another matchup in 2018.

Into the offseason, the biggest priority obviously is the head coaching job. Who’s going to be the next head coach of the Oakland Raiders? We already heard the story regarding Jim Harbaugh going to Michigan, so unfortunately we have to take him off the list. It would’ve been nice to have a coach like Harbaugh of his caliber and considering his past tenure as the QB coach for the Raiders, what better way to snatch him away at the expense of our Bay Area rival? So, we have to look elsewhere. A bunch of names have come up on the candidacy for the Head Coach position: Sparano, Todd Bowles, Jack Del Rio, Eric Mangini, Pat Shurmur, Rex Ryan. As I said before when I posted the firing of Dennis Allen, I probably want David Shaw out of Stanford. My top two picks would’ve come down to Todd Bowles or David Shaw. Mangini? Hell no, have you seen his track record with the Jets and the Browns? Shurmur? It would be beneficial for Derek Carr’s development, but again, his track record in Cleveland says otherwise. Rex Ryan, I would love to see him as our DC. As our HC, I have mix feelings about that. Del Rio, I think he’s another solid option; he’s from the East Bay, he grew up a Raiders fan, but IMHO, I would’ve loved him as a DC as well. If not one of those candidates want to take the job, then yes if I were Mark Davis and Reggie McKenzie, I would give Sparano another shot, just give him better coordinators around him. Greg Olson sucks and Jason Tarver is inconsistent. Bobby April, he’s a respected special teams coordinator and he hasn’t had that dynamic special teams returner, so I’m mixed up about that whether to retain him or not. However, everybody else on the current coaching staff besides Sparano and Al Saunders should not be retained.

Now, concerning free agency and the draft, the Raiders will again have the salary cap in the world to sign people and a load of picks. Last year’s signing with the veterans was kind of a failed experiment. Although I will say, the veteran free agents who have earned their contract money would be Justin Tuck, Antonio Smith, Donald Penn, and James Jones (even though he wasn’t WR1 worthy this season). Charles Woodson does not count considering he re-signed after completing one year of returning to the Raiders. Cut Woodley, MJD, Brown and Rogers, and release Matt Schaub. This free agency class is headlined with big time talented playmakers on both sides of the ball: Demaryius Thomas, Dez Bryant, Jeremy Maclin, Marshawn Lynch, and Ndamukong Suh are examples that come to mind. I know it’s unlikely that we’ll get some of these star-studded players, but Reggie needs to attack this free agency by mixing some players who are still young (mid to late 20s) and veterans who still have something to prove (early to mid-30s). It can’t be just veterans all the way who are past their prime or are getting to that stage, especially on the defensive side because they will get gassed out easily, especially against younger, quicker offenses. Knowing Reggie’s ties with Green Bay, I wouldn’t be surprised if he dips into their pool again, particularly if he tries to lure in Randall Cobb and Tramon Williams considering they’re free agents in this impeding offseason. Now, concerning the draft, I gotta be honest, I’m in love with Amari Cooper out of Alabama right now. No not that kind of love, but you know what I mean. I know we have a lot of needs, but Carr seriously needs someone to throw to on a consistent basis and the receivers need someone who can draw defenders. Receivers all season long are just dropping balls all over the place and are not trying to get separation from the defender in front of them. By drafting a receiver who can stretch the field and can command respect from the defense, that will relieve a lot of pressure from the current receiving corps. However, I understand Cooper is not the “be all, end all” pick. Leonard Williams is also considered. If Williams or Randy Gregory is still on the board at #4, then yes take them and create a foundation for a scary defense with Williams/Gregory, Mack, and Moore assuming that mantle to terrorize offenses. However, likely those two will be gone by the time the Raiders pick. I say, Raiders should draft Cooper and then use the rest of their draft picks to start addressing the trenches on both the offensive line and defensive line.

Overall, a disappointing season because this was the season we thought was going be the one to set the franchise on the right course. However, we were wrong again like the last 12 years and it makes us grow even more patient. Don’t worry Raider Nation, behind the dark days, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel that leads to a bright future. We have our cornerstones in Derek Carr and Khalil Mack and they’re backed by guys like Gabe Jackson, Keith McGill, Justin Ellis, T.J. Carrie, Sio Moore, Mychal Rivera, Menelik Watson, and D.J. Hayden (if he’s healthy). They need to continue build around them. Find the right coach, be smart in free agency, draft well again and the sky’s the limit for this team next season. Here’s to 2015! Thank you Raider Nation for following this rocky path with me. Until next season, I’ll see you guys later.

Kobe Bryant's Triple Double Powers Lakers in Win vs. Nuggets

It's usually hard to win at Denver during the regular season, but the Lakers changed all that tonight. Kobe Bryant recorded his 21st career triple double with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists to help the Lakers win over the Nuggets 111-103. Three other starters joined Kobe in the double figure category as Ronnie Price added 18 points, Wesley Johnson added 16 points, and Jordan Hill recorded 12 points. Carlos Boozer was the leading scorer off the bench with a near double-double of 19 points and 9 rebounds.

Final Score: @ Denver 111-103 [W]

Kobe Returns, But Lakers Still Lose to Suns

Kobe Bryant returned to the Lakers' lineup last night after resting the whole week and put up a near triple-double of 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists, but the Lakers couldn't pull away a victory at home against the streaking Suns as they beat the Lakers at Staples 116-107. Jeremy Lin was the Lakers' top performer as he scored 19 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists on an efficient 8-11 shooting off the bench, finally getting out of his slump. Nick Young was still the top scorer of the 2nd unit, tallying up 21 points. Wesley Johnson added 14 points, Ed Davis added a near double-double with 11 points and 8 rebounds, and Ronnie Price added 10 points to round out the starters in double figures.

Raiders Close Out Season With Loss vs. Broncos

Alright welcome in to the full recap of the Raiders’ final regular season game against the divisional rival, Denver Broncos where the Broncos put a hurt on the Raiders 14-47 to clinch a first round bye in the playoffs.

Outscored by the Broncos this season 21-88, that’s pretty much the story regarding the Raiders’ divisional matchups with the Broncos this season. First they make it look competitive, then it looked like the Broncos were just toying with us, then they rub it in our faces to run up the score. All I can say is f*ck that team. The one divisional rival I hate with a passion, but words are meaningless now that the season is already over and the Broncos are going to be sitting comfy waiting for their divisional opponent while the Raiders, well, an extreme makeover is coming within the team from top to bottom.

The Positives

Keith McGill, 5 tackles, 1 fumble return for a TD. Perhaps the only positive I can think of this game because the Raiders managed to showcase what McGill is made of being drafted out of the 4th round. T.J. Carrie is out, Tarell Brown and Carlos Rogers on IR, Chimdi Chekwa inactive, and McGill for the most part did a solid job. He may have gotten beat on a couple of plays by Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, but McGill’s coverage on them has been fairly decent for a rookie and cornerback is the hardest position to transition from college to the pros.

The Negatives
Offense. Too conservative, too many dropped balls. Mychal Rivera and Andre Holmes are the scapegoats on that offense. Rivera had a lot of drops, Holmes had a lot of them as well. Particularly Holmes, third quarter, McFadden and Carr executed a flea flicker well and Holmes dropped it. He may have been contacted by a Broncos defender that might’ve affected the route, but he was wide open, no excuses not to haul that in. It’s not just Rivera and Holmes, the running game didn’t show up, but since Jack Del Rio came to Denver, they’ve owned our rushing attack since.

3rd down defense. The Broncos offense made it look easy on third down. Their receivers were getting wide open for big chunks of yardage. D.J. Hayden’s coverage had a lot to do with some of those 3rd down conversions. He was playing the ball off 10 yards and was just late on getting back to Demaryius Thomas or Emmanuel Sanders. He played better in the 2nd half though, I’ll give Hayden that. Also, Khalil Mack’s hamstring problem had a lot to do with that too. The defense wasn’t getting any disruption when Manning was looking to throw the ball.

Coaching. Well, prepare for a massive overhaul in the coaching staff. Greg Olson’s gone definitively by season’s end, Jason Tarver’s gone. Olson all game long was being conservative and didn’t open up the playbook till mid 3rdquarter. Tony Sparano, there’s a reason he’s interim coach at best and not permanent head coaching material. Not trusting Janikowski to kick a field goal to keep it a two possession game, bad. The Broncos scored right after that, though it was a field goal. If the Raiders were to keep Sparano, then keep him as the O-line coach. Olson, Tarver, everyone else on the coaching, they’re all likely gone by season’s end.

Conclusion

Overall, glad the season’s over with. In what began with high expectations to shock the NFL world turned into a nightmarish ride for us Raider fans. There are some positives to take out though in this lost season, like how bright the future is with Carr at the helm and Mack being a future superstar on defense, likely he wins Defensive Rookie of The Year. However, it’s time for the organization to shake things up big time in the offseason. Anyway, thank you Raider Nation for keeping track of my coverage of the games during the season. However, football coverage is not over yet considering I have the Super Bowl in February to cover. Be sure to stand by for my yearly “Season in Review” post that I’ll put up before the New Year. Now time to fully focus on basketball. Until next season, I’ll see you guys later.

Week 17: Final Game of the Season RAIDERS @ Denver Broncos Q-by-Q Reaction

Q4:

Score: OAK 14 DEN 47

Game's pretty much over, but run up the score the Denver Broncos did. Hate that team, I really do, but there's nothing the Raiders can do to compete against that team with the talent they have. Score will change if a garbage TD happens, but glad this game is literally over and this season is over with. Stay tuned for the full recap.

Q3:

Score: OAK 14 DEN 30

Holmes, you had one job. ONE JOB. Perfect execution from McFadden and Carr on the flea flicker, Andre Holmes wide open, and he dropped it. This is why we need to draft Amari Cooper. The Raiders are still fighting out there, but that dropped pass, not electing to kick a field goal is definitely some momentum killers.

Q2:

Score: OAK 7 DEN 20

Not too much action in the 2nd quarter, but man the offense is just a total dud so far in the first two quarters. Too much conservative plays leading to the defense being on the field far too long, but they still managed to make it a manageable margin. Onto the halftime report.

Q1:

Score: OAK 7 DEN 10

Still a crazy turnover the Raiders generated, but good awareness from McGill on not waiting for the whistle and take it all the for a TD. However, we're giving the Broncos too much cushion. Quick 3 and outs by the Raiders' offense coupled with good field position given to the Broncos, not a way to start a game. Despite that defensive TD, the Broncos responded in a big way and driving in Raiders territory.

RAIDERS @ Broncos Halftime Post

Score: OAK 7 DEN 20

Alright welcome in to the halftime post of the Raiders' divisional matchup with the Denver Broncos where the Broncos lead 7-20 at the half.

The Positives

Keith McGill, 3 tackles, 1 fumble recovery for TD. This is the only positive I can take out in that first half. McGill has been tested by this Denver offense a lot. They're matching him up with the speedy Emmanuel Sanders and then Demaryius Thomas, but he's holding his own down there. A couple of plays where he got beat, but he's holding his own. Of course the highlight, the fumble for a TD off a lateral from Manning. Like I said, good awareness from McGill not waiting for the whistle and putting the Raiders on the board when things are not going right.

The Negatives

Offense. There can only be two reasons the Raiders offense is ineffective. Reason 1, the Broncos' disruptive defense, they've contained everything from the running game to the passing game. Reason 2, Greg Olson's conservative play calling. On one of the Raiders' drive drive, 2 pass plays and a screen pass only to fall short of a first down, really? Still running up the middle, really? Olson is going out with a bang on this one calling predictable plays as well as boneheaded ones.

D.J. Hayden. And he has been playing well lately, just not this game. You may count the secondary as a whole a negative, but Hayden's play is one thing that I'd like to point out. Too much playing the ball off 10 yards and he's often late getting back to either Demaryius or Sanders. Most of the reasons why the Raiders can't get off the field on third down was that Hayden is being late getting back to deflect the pass. At least he's not getting burned though on a long pass, would make it much worse.

Bottom Line

The offense has to find a way to solve the Broncos' defense. The Raiders defense is pretty much keeping them alive out there despite giving up big yardages. If they can't, I guess you can say Greg Olson is play calling his way out as well as some of the coaching staff on this team.

Lakers Fall to Mavs

Carlos Boozer followed up his bench play from last night against the Bulls in Chicago as he was the Lakers' top performer this game with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Unlike last night, the Lakers kept it close to the very only to fall short as Rajon Rondo's 21 points performance helped the Mavs power their way to victory, beating the Lakers 98-102. Four starters reached the double figure status as both Jordan Hill and Wayne Ellington contributed 12 points with Hill recording a double-double also with 10 boards. Wesley Johnson and Ed Davis joined Hill in the double-double category with 11 points and 10 rebounds from Johnson and 10 points and 11 rebound from Davis. Nick Young bounced back after being nearly shut down against the Bulls, scoring 15 points off the bench.

Final Score: @ Dallas 98-102 [L]

Pau Gasol Triumphant; Helps Bulls Beat Lakers on Christmas Day

Alright, welcome to a Christmas special full recap of the Lakers’ Christmas Day matchup with the Chicago Bulls as the Lakers, kept it close for the most part, but they started gassing out while the Bulls started turning it on as Pau Gasol stuck it to his former team to lead the Bulls to a 93-113 victory in Chicago.

First off as usual, Laker Nation, Raider Nation, Merry Christmas! I hope you guys are enjoying a wonderful time with your families, near or far in the greatest time of the year and I hoped you guys enjoyed kicking it back and watching a set of good NBA games. As for this game though, it’s been a tough sled for us Laker fans in Christmas games. After this game, the Lakers have officially lost 4 of their last 5 games on Christmas Day. It’s just tough luck, but they ran into a very tough team in the Eastern Conference. A healthy Derrick Rose, the size of Gasol and Noah, and the Bulls’ stalwart defense was just too much for the Kobe Bryant-less Lakers. Especially, Gasol, I'm sure he was motivated to battle his former team and delivered a performance we miss so much from him when he donned the purple and gold as he racked up a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds. Let's get right to the game.

The Positives

Ed Davis, 13 points. 14 rebounds, 3 blocks. Ed Davis did a surprisingly masterful job against Joakim Noah down low in the post defensively. If Noah got going with the way Gasol played, the Bulls’ margin of victory would’ve been much larger. The pick and roll game with Davis was still there, he managed to get some looks in the paint. Despite the large rebounding disparity between Davis now and Noah and Gasol, Davis managed to hold offensively and defensively it boxing out and giving the Lakers possession or 2nd chance opportunity. Keep in mind, he outrebounded both of them 9-7 in the 1st half of the game alone.

Wesley Johnson, 19 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals. The top scorer for the Lakers, Wes’s shooting efficiency still needs a lot of work. However, he provided with much needed buckets for the Lakers to keep it close, despite the Bulls pulling it out all the way once the 4th quarter was under way.

Carlos Boozer, 14 points, 7-11 shooting. The return to Chicago, Boozer didn’t quite have an impactful game that he needed to ensure the Bulls missed his presence on the team, but Nick Young was put on ice this game, Lin didn’t have an efficient, who’s going to be the one to step it up? Boozer answered that bell and provided the scoring off the bench and needed shots for the Lakers to be within striking distance for the most part of the game. Not sure if Bulls fans were chanting “boo” or “Booze” when he was making some of his baskets, but more likely “boos” because I know Bulls fans didn’t like his production considering he would go on a slump in games.

The Negatives

Nick Young, 3 points, 1-6 shooting. He was bound to have some of these games and not live up to his “Swaggy P” nickname. Like I said before, the Bulls defense put him on ice for the majority of the game and it benefitted big time. After his first field goal, Nick Young never heard a splash from his shot ever again. The Bulls game planned for Kobe Bryant, but they took that gameplan and picked on poor little Nick Young.

Jordan Hill’s jump shot. After the Clippers game back in October where Jordan Hill can from outside of the key, I was thinking “man he improved a lot on that shot.” Then after that, it started slipping away from him. Chris Webber said it best tonight. Hill should come back in the summer and hit 500 jump shots a day or something like that. Credit to the Bulls size, Hill was wise enough not to revert to his game in the post and try beating him with his jump shot, but it didn’t happen. He had a nice highlight where he got blocked by Noah and he got it again and manage to sink it in his face. Overall, Hill had a decent game, just that his jump shot wasn’t so great.

Conclusion

When everybody said the Lakers were better without Kobe, I was like “slow down, this team tends to regress the next game after beating a good team like the Warriors the previous game.” It wasn’t that type of regression this game. Sure they started slow, but they took baby steps to get right back into this, but too many baby steps will surely leave someone far behind and the Lakers took too many baby steps this game. The Bulls exploited that and at the end, they showed why they pose the biggest threat to teams like Toronto and Washington. Anyway, the Lakers can’t hang their heads down over this. They have a back-to-back game tomorrow facing off against the new look Mavericks since they made the trade to get Rajon Rondo. Well, this is the last Q-by-Q, Halftime, and Full Recap posts for Lakers basketball for the year. I’ll see you guys in January. I’m going to wrap up everything for this year after the Raiders-Broncos game, so stay tuned for that. Anyway, Merry Christmas guys and I’ll see you guys later.

12/25: Christmas Day Matchup LAKERS @ Chicago Bulls Q-by-Q Reaction

Q4:

Score: LAL 93 CHI 113

Well, it was only a matter of time the Bulls were going to start dominating in crunch time. In the 3rd quarter, they've started to manhandle the Lakers in the paint and this quarter, the three ball started going in and the defensive activity of that team just got its switch flipped. In his first game out of a Lakers uniform, Pau Gasol got his former team big time. Good show of respect from Pau to walk over to Kobe and share a little embrace, but he did what needs to be done and get his new team a W. Stay tuned for the full recap.

Q3:

Score: LAL 77 CHI 83

I did say the Lakers were gonna have to pick it up offensively at some point and they did. First cutting the lead to four, then to two, then four again, now they just gotta find a way to try and capture the lead. However, the Bulls' size definitely hurt the Lakers this quarter. Pau Gasol has found the touch, scoring and rebounding and boy do we miss that in Laker land. Nonetheless, still a six point game and the Lakers are still hanging in there.

Q2:

Score: LAL 47 CHI 58

It would've been better if the Lakers just cut it to a single digit, but we'll live with that Jimmy Butler shot to end the quarter. Other than that, aside from the fact that the Bulls outperform the Lakers in the field goal department, the Lakers have done a good job responding. At first, the Bulls were up 38-52, looks like it's they're going to pull away, but the Lakers just keep scratching and clawing to make the Bulls' lead a lot more manageable. Onto the halftime report.

Q1:

Score: LAL 24 CHI 27

Great follow up from Wayne Ellington after a missed shot to end the quarter. So, the Lakers are playing without Kobe Bryant again and unlike the Warriors game, they were off to a slow start. Derrick Rose was hot early on till he started missing his next two shots, then Pau started to pick it up, but the Lakers keep fighting and managed to climb back to cut the Bulls' lead to three. So far, Gasol is getting the best of the Lakers while Boozer just came in and just only attempted one field goal against his former team in his return to Chicago.

LAKERS @ Bulls Halftime Post

Score: LAL 47 CHI 58

Alright welcome in to the halftime post of the Lakers' Christmas Day matchup with Pau Gasol and the Chicago Bulls where the Bulls have the upper hand with a 47-58 lead at the break

The Positives

Ed Davis, 8 points, 9 rebounds, 1 block. Ed Davis is a rebounding machine. I think I may have to relinquish Jordan Hill's nickname of Mr. All-Out Hustle to Davis now because that's what he's been doing. He's managing to hold his own down low against the size of Gasol and Joakim Noah, he's out-rebounded both of them by two, Noah and Gasol just combined for 7 rebounds.

Ronnie Price, 7 points, 3-4 shooting. Like I said in the Warriors' game, Price is mostly known for his scrappy defense, but not so much for his offense, but this is the second game in a row that he's had an efficient night scoring and shooting the ball. He's following it up quite well, picking up the offensive slack and moving the ball when needed.

The Negatives

Nick Young, 3 points, 1-3 shooting. Is this the first time Swaggy P has been held to a single digit game by halftime? It's a testament to the Bulls' defense because they were planning for Kobe Bryant and when they found out he was not playing, they shifted that defensive gameplan to Nick Young and they're letting him have it.

Bench play. It's not just Nick Young who's had a off game currently, but the bench as a whole. Lin managed just 2 points on 1-5 shooting. Only Carlos Boozer seems to be shooting the ball well on the 3-5 field goals, but hasn't picked up the scoring and rebounding. Compared to the Bulls bench, the Laker bench is being outscored at a close margin 18-13.

Bottom Line

Slow start to begin with for the Lakers, but they are picking it up steadily. Now, the offense has got to pick up and hey have to start playing defensively like they did against the Warriors. The only catch is, they have to contain the Bulls' 2 bigs, but they've done a good job of that so far, allowing only Gasol to put up double figure points. Let's see what happens.

Lakers Stun Warriors

Alright, welcome in to the full recap of the Lakers’ third divisional and geographical showdown with the Golden State Warriors where the Lakers’ were up big, but they made it closer than it should’ve been as they pull it out with a 105-115 victory.

All smiles and glee from late in the 1st quarter to mid-4th quarter. The Lakers caught the Warriors riding high from such a tremendous start to the season and they managed to exploit that. They were up 23, all they needed to do was wrap it up, allow a couple of garbage time points and they get the W. However, too much garbage time points the deep Warrior reserves racked up that 4th quarter and that literally almost turned an insurmountable lead to a potential T-Mac-esque 13 points in 33 seconds. Anyway, like I said before it’s a big win for the Lakers, but pretty scary stuff on what has transpired because that Warrior team is deep and that’s evident in the Lakers’ last two meetings with them this season.

The Positives

*There were a lot of positives in this game considering the amount of Laker players in double figures, but I’m just going to pick out what were the actual positives to take away from this game.*

Ed Davis, 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks 7-7 shooting. What a game for Ed Davis. Like I said before, he’s started to pick up double figure numbers in his point total the last few games and all of his points this game came from the paint. True, the Warriors were without Andrew Bogut. I believe that would’ve made a huge difference, but his absence opened up the offense and Ronnie Price and Jeremy Lin played the pick and roll beautifully with Ed Davis and gave him open looks. Some shots, he had to work for, but most of those definitely benefitted from Price and Lin’s penetration.

Ronnie Price, 17 points, 8 assists, 3 steals, 6-10 shooting. “The Price is Right.” He’s not known to put up these kinds of numbers that much, but Price is an example of a journeyman who plays hard regardless of which team he’s playing on. When he picks up the activity on defense, the defense feeds off of that and he was swarming the Warriors’ ball movement all game long that lead to some of those steals. Price also provided much needed buckets. He’s not a solid 3 point shooter, but again that play hard mentality. Price answered the bell with those three threes in the 3rd as Curry was trying to run the Warriors’ offense through him.

Bench mob. Boozer had 18 points, 9 rebounds, Nick Young with 15 points, Lin with 11 points. Obviously Boozer’s energy was there this game, another beneficiary with the stellar pick and roll game Lin and Price ran. When he gets the ball inside and manages to get it going, Boozer is impossible to stop offensively. The bench role has worked out for him greatly this season. Nick Young, another good game, but he got tired down the stretch and most of those misses contributed to the margin being much smaller. Lin may have the meaningless double figure points out of all three off the bench, but a much needed three late from Lin in the 4th as the Warriors kept slimming it down had to go in. Props to Lin for hitting that shot before it gets out of control and he also played a solid all-around game, hitting Boozer and Davis for pick and roll plays.

The Negatives

Too much garbage time points. The Lakers were up 23 at one point, but too much garbage time points decreased the lead in the 4th. We can’t underestimate the fact that this is the deepest Warriors team since who knows when. This is the only negative I can think of because I personally didn’t like that the Lakers managed to drift off and make this close late in the 4th, when it shouldn’t have been that close. They had this in the bag already. Just a small amount of garbage points is enough, but not hitting shots and allowing that much garbage time points is just unacceptable.

Conclusion

Yeah, there is an aura in the media: Lakers won without Kobe, so Kobe is the reason why the Lakers aren’t winning too many games. True, he’s shooting the lights out for this team, but there are many more problems with this current squad than just Kobe Bryant. The Lakers will find that soon enough when they face the tough Chicago Bulls in Chicago on Christmas Day. This team has a tendency to take the next game off after a complete performance like this tonight. Before we glorify that this Laker team is better off without Kobe, we wait until this team puts up this kind of performance on a day-to-day basis. Anyway, I’ll take the win, would’ve been much better if it stayed as a total rout. I just miss those days. I’ll see you guys on Christmas Day.

12/23: LAKERS vs. Warriors Q-by-Q Reaction

Q4:

Score: GS 105 LAL 115

Note to self: even if it's garbage time, a game is never over till it's over. O-V-E-R. Nonetheless, good win, but letting the margin of victory slim down big spoils the Lakers' big win after playing a complete game, till this quarter happened. Stay tuned for the full recap.

Q3:

Score: GS 73 LAL 95

Ronnie Price is not known too much for his three point buckets, but boy were all of those 3 pointers he took gave the Lakers an even more cushion to put the Warriors back on their heels when Curry made that little run. Still good for the purple and gold, now all they gotta do is close out.

Q2:

Score: GS 48 LAL 63

Thompson and Curry may have started to find their grooves this quarter, but as long as any Warrior is not joining them on fire, the Lakers will be fine. So far, so good for the Lakers as they are just playing inspired team basketball and giving the Warriors all they could handle on both offense and defense. Onto the halftime report.

Q1:

Score: GS 24 LAL 34

Well how did the Lakers do with Kobe sitting out this game? I'd say they're doing just fine. At first, the Warriors were clicking on all cylinders and I was out there shaking my head like "here we go again." Then Wesley Johnson started clicking, Ronnie Price was being an all-around guy, the bench mob with Boozer, Lin, and Young shows up and all of a sudden momentum has swung in our favor. Lakers are taking it to the Warriors who have the best record and this quarter is a preview of how this is setting up to be a "trap game" for the Warriors.

LAKERS vs. Warriors Halftime Post

Score: GS 48 LAL 63

Alright welcome in to the halftime post of the Lakers' matchup with the Warriors where the Lakers lead 48-63 heading into the locker room.

The Positives

Ed Davis, 12 points, 6-6 shooting. Ed Davis may have just found himself finally in the starting rotation. He's put up double figures the last few games, but he has the points that he has the first two quarters and credit to both Ronnie Price and Jeremy Lin playing the pick-and-roll beautifully and in a timely manner for Davis to get these open looks in the paint.

Nick Young, 11 points, 4-6 shooting. When Swaggy P gets hot, he's on. He might be the biggest beneficiary with Kobe Bryant sitting out. He's everywhere so far, shooting 3's, driving to the hoop, playing defense (such a rarity), he's provided that spark plug once again.

Wesley Johnson, 12 points, 5-9 shooting. Wes started all this. He's not known to put up great double figure numbers, especially on mid range shots, but he's found the touch this game and that helped spark the team too.

Defense. The defense was stellar in the first half. We can live with Curry and Thompson to get going, but they have done a great job containing everyone else. Ronnie Price has been everywhere, the Lakers generated 12 turnovers, something unheard of the Warriors this season, and the Laker defense is just swarming right now.

The Negatives

No negatives. Aside from the 9 turnovers, there are not a lot negatives I can think of for the Lakers in the first half. They are playing at near flawless level, taking it to one of the best teams in the West.

Bottom Line

This energy has to drag on for another 24 minutes. Just because the Warriors are not doing good right now, they have a tendency to turn it on in the 2nd half behind the Splash Bros. However like I said before, if the Lakers contain everyone else and keep hitting their shots on offense, then there's a legit chance the Lakers pull the upset. We'll see what happens.

Sunday, December 21, 2014

Lakers Lose to Kings

Nick Young was the Lakers' top performer off the bench with 26 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 assist on 7-14 shooting, but the Lakers couldn't get back on track as they can't find answer to stop DeMarcus Cousins, Rudy Gay, and Ben McLemore as all three Kings players had 20+ point performances to help the Kings beat the Lakers 101-108. Ed Davis racked up 10 points, but another story is Kobe Bryant's shooting night. Bryant finished with 25 points, but shot 8-30 from the field and committed 9 turnovers.

Final Score: @ Sacramento 101-108 [L]

Raiders Sneak Out With Win and Eliminate Bills From the Playoffs

Alright, welcome in to the full recap of the Raiders’ Week 16 matchup with the Buffalo Bills where the Raiders pull out in a tight one late in a 24-26 victory, sending the Bills out of playoff contention.

Well, you can erase that misleading title I came up with in the Q-by-Q post. In case nobody is aware, the Raiders have signed another 1-year lease extension at the Coliseum, allowing the team to stay in Oakland for at least one more year. But other than that, I’m still pretty angry about the Raiders allowing that TD. You can’t consider that garbage points because it opened up some opportunity for the Bills to potentially win it on a field goal, but it’s a good feeling to win the last home game of the season, especially since there’s uncertainty where the Oakland Raiders go from here once their lease extension at the Coliseum is up.

The Positives

Derek Carr, 17 of 34 passes, 214 yards, 2 TDs. Without question, Derek Carr is the franchise QB of the future. Like I said time and time again, it’s been rough for him, he doesn’t have enough help, he had the toughest schedule to cope up with and the piled up with his naysayers crying for Matt McGloin to start or ridiculously saying “bring Pryor back.” However, Carr is taking those baby steps and it has showed against Kansas City on Thursday Night, in the Battle of the Bay game, and now this game. Here, he learned when to perform in the clutch when the game is too close for comfort. The Bills are within two, Carr answers with a long bomb to Holmes and sets up a TD pass to Olawale to give the defense a nine point cushion.

Kenbrell Thompkins, 5 receptions, 90 yards. I’m surprised a competent team like the Patriots let him go just like that. Anyway, Thompkins had his best game as a receiver for the Raiders after basically being extraneous in the offense since being claimed off waivers. Thompkins’ 50 yard catch from Derek Carr set the tone on what kind of game he’s going to have and he stepped up big time when other receivers can’t make a play.

Andre Holmes, 3 receptions, 73 yards. Though Thompkins had the best game out of all the receivers, Holmes stepped it up when it mattered the most. Derek Carr was pretty much running away from the heat and just heaved it to Holmes to move the chains into Buffalo territory. Holmes may not have done much, but his jump ball catch was huge to keep the Bills on their heels.

Linebackers. Khalil Mack had 3 solo tackles, 1 assist tackle, and a sack, and he was getting pressure in Kyle Orton’s face and stuffing the run game. If this season so far does not give Khalil Mack Defensive Rookie of the Year with the way he has performed all season long, then the NFL truly hates us. Miles Burris was everywhere also, racking up 11 solo tackles and 2 assist tackles. I’m still not sold on Burris being the “Mike” linebacker, he’s better off on the outside. Ray Ray Armstrong also stepped up and had a pretty good game.

The Negatives

Missed Red Zone opportunities. The margin of victory would’ve been a lot bigger if it weren’t for those missed red zone opportunities. We’re lucky none of those red zone opportunities that the Raiders missed didn’t cost them in the long run and neither did the missed Janikowski field goal as well. That serves a life lesson to score touchdowns and not field goals, you never know when your most reliable kicker will miss it in crucial times when needed. I’m just saying, probably the only negative I will note up. The defense played solid until the Bills’ final drive. We could be talking a bigger margin of victory rather than a victory on a safety lead.

Conclusion

Well, we got another win, but I don’t know how this shakes up our position in the draft. Considering the Jets, Titans, and Bucs are still at 2 wins and the Jaguars also got their 3rd win. No matter what happens to our spot, I just hope Amari Cooper is still available on the board. I know we have many other needs, but we need a playmaker to take off some pressure from our receivers. Nonetheless, great win and the Raiders stay in Oakland for one more year. Get something done! I’ll see you guys for the Denver game next week. Stay tuned for the quick recap of the Lakers-Kings game today.

12/21: Week 16 Final Home Game at the Coliseum = Final Home Game in Oakland? RAIDERS vs. Buffalo Bills Q-by-Q Reaction

Q4:

Score: BUF 24 OAK 26

Wow, we almost blew it there. I don't know if Janikowski decided to miss that field goal on purpose since already "won" or what, but that left the door open for the Bills' playoff hopes. Luckily, Carr was able to eat up time away with the drive early on this quarter on another long bomb to Andre Holmes, setting up Jamize Olawale for the TD. Great, clutch drive by Carr, great, clutch INT by Brandian Ross, and again, great, clutch onside recovery by Charles Woodson. He still can do it all in his 17th season. We put a damp on the Chiefs' playoff hopes, we played a big part in derailing the 49ers playoff hopes even more, and we eliminated the Bills from the playoffs. Stay tuned for the full recap.

Q3:

Score: BUF 10 OAK 19

We want touchdowns, not field goals! More missed opportunities to put a lot of points on the board is leaving some window of opportunity for the Bills and it's evident the way they're driving right now on offense. However, that doesn't negate how stalwart the defense has played this quarter until the current Bills' drive.

Q2:

Score: BUF 10 OAK 13

This is why protecting a bigger lead is important. Didn't like the way how the defense decided to play it safe and set up a field goal to cut the deficit to 3. Anyway, competitive game so far. Onto the halftime report.

Q1:

Score: BUF 7 OAK 0

Epic deep ball from Derek Carr to Kenbrell Thompkins to set up the Raiders in red zone at the end of the quarter. Before that play, there was more bad than good in that quarter. D.J. Hayden got burned big time by Sammy Watkins for the Bills' lone TD and the offense wasn't getting anything going, but other than that, the Carr to Thompkins deep ball woke everybody up and the defense has done a good job holding its own since that Bills TD. C-Wood got that 60th INT, adding more to his resume as a future HOF candidate.

RAIDERS vs. Bills Halftime Post

Score: BUF 10 OAK 13

Alright welcome in to the halftime post of the Bills-Raiders game where the Raiders have a field goal lead heading into the half.

The Positives

Derek Carr, 6 of 16 passes, 105 yards, 1 TD. Derek Carr is continuing to grow before our very eyes. The Chiefs game last week is likely something to forget about, but he's doing a good job holding his own against this tough Bills defensive line. He only got sacked once. Other than that, Carr's highlight in that 1st half was his 50 yard bomb to Kenbrell Thompkins setting up a TD pass to James Jones. The offense needed a spark and Carr just delivered that spark.

Kenbrell Thompkins, 2 receptions, 63 yards. This is a continuation on that one play where Derek Carr threw a long bomb. He said, he wants to get Thompkins involved into the offense and there it was, a 50 yard pass play to set up a TD to tie up the game. He's the leading receiver for the Raiders this game so far.

Khalil Mack, 3 solo tackles, 1 assist tackle. Mack should have the Defensive Rookie of the Year award under wraps. Even though the defense as a whole is doing a tremendous job holding the Bills' offense despite giving up that Sammy Watkins TD, Mack has stood out, generating pressure and stuffing the run. He's a beast out there.

The Negatives

Red zone opportunities. The only negative I will highlight. There should've been a couple more points on the board since the run game was clicking at the right time when one of the Bills' defensive players went out.

Bottom Line

Raiders are looking towards the offseason, the Bills are trying to keep their season alive. They're playing them tough and that should continue heading into the 2nd half if they want to spoil any playoff hopes the Bills have left.

Lakers Fall to Thunder Late After Missed Game Winning Shot by Kobe

I managed to catch the final 3 minutes of the 4th quarter by the time I got home and I'll admit, that game should've never come down to Kobe Bryant taking that last shot, even though he should've kicked it back to an open Jeremy Lin instead of forcing it. The Lakers had a 3 point lead, all they had to do was grit and grind defensively and not foul, but they didn't get that memo. Ed Davis had his best game as a starter and was the Lakers' top performer this game, recording a near double-double of 18 points and 9 rebounds on 8-10 shooting. However, the Lakers couldn't hold on in the late stretch of a 4th quarter that had multiple lead changes as Russell Westbrook's 31 point performance helped the Thunder escape LA to a 104-103 victory. Jordan Hill and Ronnie Price rounded out the starters in double figures with 10 points from Hill and 14 points from Price. Carlos Boozer and Jeremy Lin carried the bench as Boozer racked up 14 points and Lin racked up 12 points, both filling the role of Nick Young, who finished with 10 points, after being ejected for elbowing Steven Adams. Kobe Bryant had an ice cold shooting night, finishing with 9 points on 3-15 shooting including the missed game winning shot that would've won it for the Lakers.

As you may know the Lakers-Thunder game is on ESPN and I was expected to provide Q-by-Q, Halftime, and Full Recap posts. However, something else special is happening tomorrow. I'll be attending a friend's graduation from culinary school at the Santa Clara Convention Center and I might be out to the point I might miss out the majority of the game. Lakers Fall to Pacers

Back-to-back games are always difficult to overcome with wins. After celebrating Kobe Bryang surpassing Michael Jordan on the all-time scoring list on Sunday against the T'Wolves, the Lakers were still hungover from that heading to Indiana on Monday night. Nick Young was the Lakers' top performer off the bench recording a rare double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds on 6-12 shooting, but the Lakers were well overwhelmed against a struggling, Paul George-less Pacers team as the Pacers beat the Lakers 91-110. Kobe Bryant, after passing Jordan, followed up with 21 points, Wesley Johnson added 13 points, and Carlos Boozer came off the bench also with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

And all he needed was 9 points. Kobe Bryant scored 26 points, but he just needed 9 and on a pair of free throws, he surpassed his Royal Airness, the G.O.A.T., Michael Jordan at 3rd all-time in scoring as the Lakers beat the T'Wolves 100-94. Carlos Boozer was the all-around top performer with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds on 10-14 shooting, Jordan Hill added 13 points, and Wesley Johnson added 12 points.

Raiders Blown Out by Chiefs

Alright welcome in to the full recap of the Raiders’ divisional matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs where the Chiefs get revenge in a big way after a humiliating defeat on Thursday Night, defeating the Raiders 13-31.

Do any of you notice a pattern here? Raiders win against the same Chiefs team Thursday Night at home, then get embarrassed by the Rams 52-0 on the road. Raiders win against a tough 49ers team at home, then they get routed today at Kansas City 13-31. That’s a neat pattern I just noticed. Would’ve been nice to sweep the “red teams” to close out the season, but we might’ve reclaimed that top pick. I may be wrong considering both Jacksonville and Tampa Bay lost.

The Positives

No positives. Even though the Raiders made this a tightly contested game for the majority the game, all that effort went out the window in the 2nd half. Justin Tuck had a huge roughing the passer penalty to set up by Knile Davis. Then a bad snap by Wisniewski caused a fumble, Chiefs recover, sets up a Alex Smith TD pass to Travis Kelce. Carr struggled; there are not a lot of positives to take away from this game.

The Negatives

Offensive line. 4 sacks on Derek Carr, the O-line allowed 4 sacks on Carr. The O-line struggled all game long to give Carr any time and keep him upright. Penn struggled, Austin Howard struggled, Gabe Jackson struggled. Wisniewski had some miscues with Derek Carr; he had 1 delay of game penalty and the aforementioned bad snap that lead to a fumble. Khalif Barnes, isn’t it obvious already that he has been a liability on the O-line for the last 5 years? And yet we still signed him to a 1-year extension. He’s good for depth, but putting him on the starting lineup? It’s all bad when Khalif starts, especially on the road against a very good front seven.

Special teams. The first quarter alone for special teams should leave them on the negative for the rest of the game. It’s usually a bad omen when a punt return for a TD gives a team a lead and that happened. Bad special teams coverage on De’Anthony Thomas and it was a sign of bad things to come during this game.

Receivers. Too many dropped balls. Just too many of them. Andre Holmes had some of them, James Jones, Rivera. Again, this is why Derek Carr needs a receiver like an Amari Cooper in the draft. They just couldn’t get any separation from the Chiefs’ secondary, especially when Carr was throwing balls down the field. At least try and fight for the ball or draw a PI penalty, none of the receivers tried to do neither of the two, although there was PI in garbage time to set up a James Jones TD pass, but again that’s garbage time when the Chiefs’ defense is not even trying.

Conclusion

Can’t say I’m satisfied with our two wins of the season. It sucks to lose, but there’s no other way to go but look forward into the offseason. Next week may be the last game at the O.Co against Buffalo. The Bills pulled out a stunning win against the Packers, so that’s nothing to look forward to because they just stopped a hot team on their tracks. At least we’re not going to go 0-16. The Thursday Night game was perfect timing to set up a first win and the Battle of the Bay game last week was a huge for bragging rights. Anyway, I’ll see you guys for the Bills game next week. Stay tuned for the quick recap on tonight’s Laker game against the Minnesota Timberwolves as Kobe Bryant will surpass Jordan at third on the all-time scoring list. I’ll see you guys later.

Week 15: RAIDERS @ Kansas City Chiefs Q-by-Q Reaction

Q4:

Score: OAK 13 KC 31

Leave it to garbage time points to make the score misleading as it should be. It has been the story at this point of the season. Once the Raiders get a win, they come crashing back down in a blowout loss. Stay tuned for the full recap.

Q3:

Score: OAK 6 KC 31

From a tightly contested game to a rout. Yup, haven't seen that one before. The good news is that probably we'll reclaim that top pick in the draft and hold Marcus Mariotta hostage for any team that wants to trade the farm for him. Overall, just a bad quarter for the Raiders, nothing else to say.

Q2:

Score: OAK 3 KC 10

Solid drive by Carr, despite being hampered by a leg injury (he looks fine though). 2 minute drill set up a Sebastian Janikowski field goal to cut the Chiefs lead into a TD lead. Onto the halftime report.

Q1:

Score: OAK 0 KC 7

And now you know why are special teams are not so special all season long. Not a single kickoff return for a TD, not a single punt return for a TD, bad coverage and this was evident when De'Anthony Thomas took a booming punt from Marquette King all the way to the house. Both teams started off strong defensively with 3 and outs, although the Chiefs were hampered by penalties early on, but that punt return TD was a huge momentum swing for the Chiefs.

RAIDERS @ Chiefs Halftime Post

Score: OAK 3 KC 10

Alright welcome in to the halftime post of the Raiders' divisional matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs where the Chiefs have a touchdown lead heading into the 2nd half.

The Positives

Defense. Aside from the long bomb to De'Anthony Thomas where D.J. Hayden got seriously burned (c'mon man), the defense has done a solid job containing the Chiefs offense. Penalties on the Chiefs and some incomplete passes played a factor on the Chiefs' inefficiency on the offensive side, but the defense has given the Chiefs offense no room to score.

The Negatives

Special teams. Again referring back to the De'Anthony Thomas punt return for a TD. That's the main negative the whole game. It was good booming punt by Marquette King deep within the Raiders' territory and then the coverage on Thomas just was non-existent and lead to an 81 yard return to the house.

Offensive line. Khalif Barnes, please leave or just sit on the bench. Understandable that Menelik Watson is out, but two false starts and allowing a sack by Justin Houston on Derek Carr, enough said. Wisniewski also had a bad delay of game penalty. He was still calling the protection and Carr was signaling him to snap it, causing the delay. Aside from Barnes and Wiz, the O-line are just being pushed back by the Chiefs' stout defensive front.

Bottom Line

The Raiders deferred in the coin toss and will receive the 2nd half kickoff. Usually when that happens, the Raiders don't capitalize and post a quick 3 and out. Can they end that drought and put together on solid opening drive in the 3rd? Let's see what happens.

Lakers Squeak By Defending Champs in OT

Alright welcome in to the full recap of the Lakers-Spurs game where the Lakers pull off their biggest win of the season so far, stunning the defending champion Spurs 112-110 in overtime in San Antonio. It was all thanks to Nick Young as he made an impossible three pointer that was the game winning shot.

Well some good news and some bad news. The good news, the Lakers won a really tough game. The bad news, Kobe Bryant didn't surpass Michael Jordan on 3rd all-time. The first three quarters, it looked like the Spurs were gonna pull away early, then the Lakers come out and it looked like they were gonna pull away. They retained a big lead in the 4th, but just too many errors down the stretch that almost cost the game. In OT, it was a classic grit and grind shootout, but the Lakers came out on top. We may not have a winning record, but this game almost made my heart drop because the Lakers were shooting themselves in the foot and letting the Spurs back in. You can't do that, but they won, so it didn't come back to bite them.

The Positives

Nick Young, 29 points, 9-14 shooting, 6-9 shooting from beyond the arc. If Kobe is the closest we've ever seen to Michael Jordan, then Nick Young is the closest we've seen to Kobe Bryant. Too soon? Yeah I guess a little too soon. But, I'll have what Swaggy P had because whatever he took before the game, he was playing out of his mind. A perfect 5-5 from 3 point land to start, the Spurs defense were shaking their head because most of those shot he made were impossible. However, in OT, that hail Mary 3 point shot with Ginobili in his face for the game winner? Kobe-Wan (Star Wars reference) has taught him well. That reminded me of that shot Kobe took when J.R. Smith was all in his grill during game 3 of the 2009 WCF. Overall, Nick Young was insane this game and his performance helped the Lakers greatly, like I said, there's a reason he comes off the bench because he's a spark plug.

Carlos Boozer, 14 points, 10 rebounds, 7-12 shooting. The last few games, Boozer has been more efficient coming off the bench. Byron Scott was up to something when he benched Boozer for the first time and it has worked. This game, he provided a lot of clutch baskets when Kobe was playing point. Every time Kobe got him the ball, Booze just comes through strong and giving the Lakers a much needed break when the Spurs were roaring back.

Jeremy Lin, 14 points, 8 assists, 6-14 shooting. I never understood why Byron Scott sat him down when the Spurs were cutting the deficit by providing huge runs, but Lin was having a solid game based on what I'm seeing. He's being aggressive, making shots, clamping down the Spurs' stout defense. It's understandable that Scott wanted Kobe to play point so the double team can draw to him and he'll find the open man, but at least put him in when it matters because the Lakers played out of control the last few minutes in the 4th quarter with the ball movement.

The Negatives

4th quarter turnovers. This is the negative that spoils the Lakers' upset over the Spurs. Credit where its due, Ginobili, Danny Green, and Cory Joseph are tenacious defenders. The Lakers had like a 101-92 lead, then those crucial turnovers, particularly on the out of bounds possessions. Those out of bounds reviews under 2 minutes are just killer. Three of those, it looked like the Spurs touched it last, two of those were overturned and gift-wrapped the Spurs with opportunity to pull it out and escape this "trap game." It almost costed the Lakers big time and lucky enough they didn't pay for it.

2nd chance points. The Lakers may have a 2 rebound advantage against the Spurs in offensive rebounding, but most of the Spurs' offensive rebounding lead to 2nd chance points. The definite killer out of those was Ginobili's 3 pointer to put the Spurs within 4. He missed a three previously, but an offensive rebound kept the Spurs alive and he didn't manage to miss the 2nd time. Overall, turnovers and giving the Spurs 2nd chance opportunities lead to a near Laker meltdown in San Antonio.

Conclusion

Looks like I'm just going to provide you guys with a quick recap on Kobe surpassing Jordan in Sunday's game at Minnesota. Despite with all "hoo hahs" that happened in the 4th quarter, you can't take away that the Lakers played an inspiring performance against the defending champs in their own house. It's tough to do that considering we are not that good and the Spurs just play beautiful basketball under Coach Pop. However, I'll take it. You know what they say, better to win ugly than to lose pretty and the Lakers won ugly. Anyway, the next Q-by-Q, Halftime Post, and Full Recap will be on December 19 when the Lakers take on a rejuvenated OKC Thunder team since the returns of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook so expect quick recaps of the games in between. I'll see you guys for that game and I'll see you back on Sunday when the Raiders take on the Kansas City Chiefs.

12/12: LAKERS @ San Antonio Spurs Q-by-Q Reaction

OT:

Score: LAL 112 SA 110

SWAGGY P! Enough said. The Lakers almost gave this one to the Spurs after playing so well, but credit to the defending champs for playing like champs down the stretch and it went down to the wire. Welp, looks like we're going to have to wait for Sunday for Kobe to surpass Michael Jordan on the all-time scoring list. Stay tuned for the full recap.

Q4:

Score: LAL 101 SA 101

First overtime for the Q-by-Q posts. But just an unacceptable quarter by the Lakers. Both teams didn't really shoot well this quarter, but the Lakers just made too many errors as they were trying to pull away after Kobe made a hail Mary 3. Lucky Ginobili missed that first free throw or this game would've ever. Extra time, extra minutes for Kobe to surpass Jordan.

Q3:

Score: LAL 86 SA 75

The Spurs gave a scare this quarter as they have cut the lead countless times by a small margin as the Lakers were missing their shots. What do the Lakers do? They bring in Lin and Young off the bench to provide a little scoring boost to keep the Spurs honest. Lin continues to be aggressive and Young just continues to light up the night in San Antonio, he's got 22 points in the game. As for Kobe, will he get those 12 points to surpass Jordan in the 4th?

Q2:

Score: LAL 54 SA 50

Just an inspiring performance from the Lakers so far. From being down 10 in the 1st quarter to taking a 4 point lead, giving the defending champs a run for their money. Onto the halftime report.

Q1:

Score: LAL 25 SA 25

Good response by the Lakers mid-way through this quarter. When the Spurs got off to a 0-10 start, it looked like the Lakers were done for early on, but the Lakers responded back after a timeout. They generated 7 turnovers from the Spurs, uncharacteristic for the defending champs and Lin, Boozer, and Young provided the much needed spark to bring the Lakers back. I gotta say, that's a pretty ballsy move by Byron Scott the last few games, but it's working.

LAKERS @ Spurs Halftime Post

Score: LAL 54 SA 50

Alright welcome in to the halftime post of the Lakers' matchup with the defending champion Spurs where the Lakers lead by 4 heading into the locker room.

The Positives

Nick Young, 15 points, 5-6 beyond the arc. Aside from that lone miss, "wow" is all I can say from Swaggy P. That's what he does best and there's a reason why he comes off the bench. Keep in mind, the Spurs defense is solid defending the 3 point line and Byron Scott doesn't want the Lakers to live and die by the 3, but Young was almost hitting everything from all cylinders. It didn't matter how good the Spurs played D on him, he could've hit deep within half court if he wanted to.

Jeremy Lin, 12 points, 5-7 shooting. In the starting lineup, Lin has been up and down. Putting him on the bench, the last few minutes, it created some confidence for him. So far, Lin has been aggressive penetrating the hoop, what he usually when he's at his best, especially against this good Spurs defense. 5-7 shooting, 2-2 from the arc, 5 assists, Lin is playing a solid game off the bench.

The Negatives

Closing out. This is probably the only negative I pinpoint throughout the whole game. The Lakers have done a good job defensively, generating 9 turnovers from the Spurs and grabbing 15 defensive rebounds, but they need to do a better job closing out. For example Boozer is late whenever Diaw gets the ball and that leaves him wide open for a three, luckily Diaw missed some of those open shots from beyond the arc.

Bottom Line

Like I said, the Lakers are playing inspired. The last time they played the Spurs, straight up got their @$$es handed to them in LA. The Lakers need to keep up with this formula: get the Spurs to not play Spurs basketball (turnovers) and the bench needs to keep it up because the starting lineup Scott put out there cannot hold its own against this San Antonio team. Kobe is 19 points away from surpassing MJ, will he do it in the 2nd half? Let's see what happens.

Lakers Hold On for W vs. Kings

*Again playing catch up with the latest Laker games (wrapped up finals week). I am aware that this game was televised on NBA TV for Tuesday Fan Night, but I enforced a policy that I will only do NBA TV games that are scheduled beforehand*

Kobe Bryant was the top performer this game with 32 points, 3 rebounds, and 6 assists to rally the Lakers past the Kings to a 95-98 victory Tuesday. Kobe is now 31 points away from surpassing the G.O.A.T himself at 3rd on the all-time scoring list. Ed Davis added 11 points on a perfect 5-5 shooting and Wesley Johnson added 10 points to round up the double figure scorers in the starting lineup. Carlos Boozer seems to be finding his rhythm off the bench as he recorded a near double-double with 15 points and 9 rebounds, another efficient game for Boozer making this his 2nd game coming off the scores table. Nick Young was the 2nd leading scorer off the bench with 12 points.

Final Score: vs. Sacramento 95-98 [W]

Next Game: @ San Antonio (12/12) <= Q-by-Q, Halftime, and Full Recap Post (questionable)

Lakers Hammered by Pelicans

*Just trying to play catch-up with the latest Laker games I still haven't posted yet. I had finals this week, which derailed any time for me to post anything during the week day. Also, I was still a little hungover over the Raiders' win vs. the 49ers, but after I did all the Q-by-Q, Halftime Post, and Full Recap, I went straight to studying.*

After failing to coming out strong during the 3 game East Coast road trip, the Lakers returned home and got a surprise "welcome home" by the visiting Pelicans. Ed Davis, replacing Carlos Boozer in the starting lineup Sunday night was the Lakers' top performer with 12 points and 7 rebounds, but it had minimal effect as Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday powered the Pelicans past the Lakers 104-87. Kobe Bryant and Wesley Johnson round up the starters in double figures as Kobe scored 14 points and Johnson chipped in 10 points. Nick Young was the Lakers' leading scorer off the bench with 13 points, but shot 3-13 on the field, Carlos Boozer added 12 points on 6-12 shooting, and Jordan Clarkson rounded up the double figure scoring off the bench with 10 points.

Final Score: vs. New Orleans 104-87 [L]

Raiders Gain Bragging Rights in The Bay

Alright welcome in to the full recap of the 13th Battle of the Bay game between the Raiders and the "San Francisco" 49ers or is it Santa Clara? Doesn't matter. The Raiders got up, stood up, and fought to gain the victory over the Niners 13-24 and gain leverage, leading 7-6 all-time against the team across the Bay or forget it down I-880 from where I live.

I'm just trying to control my emotions right now while I'm posting this. Currently, I'm also having an argument with a Niner fan, who is also a good friend of mine on Facebook, but I just told him to pipe down. They won 3 straight Battle of the Bay games against us before this game and now we broke that streak and gain the lead, now they won't leave us alone. I don't know, some Niner fans just don't quit don't they? Anyway, what a game. I was nervously shaking and I was yelling my freakin' @$$ off. I need to exhale before I do this post, but oh well, let's get to this.

The Positives

Derek Carr, 22 of 28 passes, 254 yards, 3 TDs. The Carr is finally running. I repeat the Carr is finally running! What's funny is that there was an article on which QB would you take, most former NFL scouts said they would take Carr over Kaepernick, while the media "experts" said otherwise they would take Kaepernick over Carr. Well, the "experts" were wrong and the scouts were right. Carr completely outplayed Kaepernick this game as Kaepernick completed only 54% of his passes compared to Carr with 78% and not to mention, Kaep had those 2 picks. Carr's performance this game is putting his naysayers on their heels. He's only a rookie, he'll make rookie mistakes, but this game, he grew up and played like he has been in this stage before.

R&R. This should be the initials for the duo of Marcel Reece and Mychal Rivera. Rivera had a big game today with a perfect 7 receptions for 109 yards and a TD, Reece had also a perfect 7 receptions for 64 yards and a TD. Rivera's communication with Carr this game has been remarkable and it lead to this unexpected big game against a good 49ers defense. For Reece, I've developed an initial: G.T.R.B. = Give Reece The Ball. And boom Reece was given the ball and did damage as well against the Niners in the passing game. Greg Olson, I hate you, but I'll give you 100% credit for developing a near-flawless playcalling on offense and Reece and Rivera provided much needed help for Carr in the passing game.

Defense. Like I said before, the defense absolutely came out to play. Oh my goodness, they were just pressuring Kaepernick all game long. Antonio Smith had 2 sacks, Khalil Mack had 2 sacks, Benson Mayowa also had a sack. Sio Moore, Tuck, Burris, bringing the heat. I'll keep looking back to that Brandian Ross INT because that INT set the tone that the Niners are not going to run lapses around us, not in our house. And of course you got C-Wood coming up big with an INT to pretty much seal the game. 59 career interception, man just one more to get to that big 60. 17 years and still coming up big. Just like I gave credit to Olson, hats off to Jason Tarver for calling more aggressive defensive plays. I absolutely liked that he dressed with some black marks on like he wants to be there to. That's priceless.

The Negatives

Penalties. The penalties have been a thorn in the eye for this game.  Raiders committed 10 penalties for 84 yards, but some of those were ticky tacky. Of course the Austin Howard penalty was unnecessary, but just too many PIs, illegal contacts, holding on the secondary, a lot of them were questionable like the refs were pulling for the Niners. But the Raiders managed the will to win mentality aside from all the penalties going against them.

Conclusion

Oh man, Stillmattic must be shaking somewhere on his Bleach blog. Check out our Smack Talk post two days before the game. First became a Niner fan last year, then the Seahawks won the NFC championship and the Super Bowl and now my beloved Raiders beat his Niners. Hey, he hid from me as a Bronco fan when the Raiders dropped 59 points on them 4 years ago in Denver. So Stillmattic, if you're reading this, it's over, you can't hide from me now in terms of football. You denied that Denver game, but since you rep the Niners you know with your Gold Blooded merchandise and your posters that you probably jack off to night and day, I'm afraid you can't deny this one my friend. Anyway, the Raiders travel to Kansas City to face the Chiefs, but I'm going to enjoy rubbing this win in a lot, especially since I live in Santa Clara. Even though it's a loss season, this game was the sweetest one to take out of this season. Bragging rights belong to us! The Niners may have an Empire, but there is one Nation they will never conquer, THE RAIDER NATION! Anyway, I'll see you guys later.

Week 14: BATTLE OF THE BAY RAIDERS vs. San Francisco 49ers Q-by-Q Reaction

Q4:

Score: SF 13 OAK 24

Enough said. Stay tuned for the full recap.

Q3:

Score: SF 13 OAK 17

You can tell Derek Carr wants this game, our defense wants this game. Carr is really coming to his own, his communication with Rivera to get open was evident, setting up a TD by Reece on the slant. He's also following through the progressions of his receivers, not a single pressure fazing him. 4th quarter, crucial 3rd down drive. LET'S GO! FINISH!

Q2:

Score: SF 10 OAK 10

A competitive game so far. I would've loved the lead heading into the half, but at least we just limited them to a field goal. Like I said, a tough, gritty game. Whoever endures in the 2nd half will get this win. Onto the halftime report.

Q1:

Score: SF 7 OAK 3

Good run from Latavius Murray to end the 1st quarter, but dammit I was livid when I saw McFadden as the RB in that 1st possession. Defense got off to a good start. Congrats to Brandian Ross for that 1st INT against "Kaeperpick." The defense came out to play until that last 49er drive, all because our offense isn't doing much. Luckily, Sebass made a 57 yard field goal at the start to put the Raiders within 4, although that was for the lead early on.

RAIDERS vs. 49ers Halftime Post

Score: SF 10 OAK 10

Alright welcome in to the halftime post of the BATTLE OF THE BAY between the Raiders and the Niners where both the Bay Area teams are all tied up at 10 a piece.

The Positives

Derek Carr, 10 of 14 completed passes, 93 yards, 1 TD. After a shellacking last week against the Rams, Carr is bouncing back in a big way so far. Even with the 49ers having Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, and Aldon Smith, Carr is staying calm in the pocket and alluding away from the pressure. That TD to Donald Penn was awesome, I'll say that and that provided a little laughs and giggles from us Raider fans as that TD gave the Raiders the lead.

Defense. Defense has come to play so far. That Brandian Ross INT on the first drive for the Niners set the tone for the defensive unit that hey, you're in our house and we'll take it to you. Surprising thing is it's not Sio Moore, Khalil Mack, or Justin Tuck that's sacking Kaepernick, though they are generating enormous pressure and that helped Benson Mayowa and Antonio Smith gets sacks on Kaepernick, though we gotta stop him when uses his legs.

The Negatives

Penalties. A couple of penalties were unnecessary and a couple more were a bunch of BS from the refs. The Austin Howard penalty, definitely I can agree on that, that was a bad penalty. However, some of these PI penalties were just complete crap. The PIs are going the Niners way, but not our way, particularly when Butler and Holmes were contacted, those were not called, but Tarell Brown and D.J. Hayden were called on PI even though Hayden's was understandable. I thought that was a bunch of BS.

Bottom Line

Well at least we got the ball in the 2nd half first since we deferred on the coin toss. The Raiders need to continue to play tough against the more physical Niners. Please, Raiders, I'm begging you, show up for the 2nd half and fight on!
