While everybody is spending Valentine's Day with the love of their life today, the only date that basketball fans have is NBA All-Star weekend. The break couldn't have come at a better time, but teams were not out of the woods yet. That bodes true for the Lakers. There was still business to take care of before LeBron, AD, and Dwight Howard head to All-Star weekend. Let's see how the team fared in this week's special Weekly Roundup.
02/10: vs. Phoenix 100-125 [W] (40-12)
Oh, the poor Suns. They showed a lot of promise early on this season when it looked like the franchise was turning the corner. Heading into the break, they find themselves under .500 again. To make matters worst, while AD dominated with 25 points and 10 rebounds, it was Rajon Rondo doing the most damage. Playoff Rondo came to play this game, dropping 23 points and connecting on four 3-pointers. Literally, the Suns' defense was daring him to shoot and they paid for it big time. On another side of note, Dwight Howard had 14 points and 15 rebounds off the bench. He's outplayed McGee during this stretch at Center. As for the Suns, at least Devin Booker is an All-Star after Damian Lillard strained his groin.
02/12: @ Denver 120-116 (OT) [W] (41-12)
What a way to close out the 1st half of the regular season! It doesn't get any better than this. The two best teams in the West going head to head. LeBron and AD going up against Jamal Murray and the Joker, Nikola Jokic. It was a game of momentum swings as the Nuggets jumped on the Lakers to a fast start. Then, the Lakers went on a massive run spearheaded by LeBron and AD, the energy of Alex Caruso, and the hustle and defense from Dwight Howard. Dwight again has proven his worth. He and AD were frustrating Jokic all game long. Jokic this game was relying on drawing contact, hoping the refs would blow their whistle. They weren't having it this game. The 4th quarter and OT presented a classic finish to this game and the Lakers behind the clutch 3-point shooting from AD. This game showed the Lakers aren't waiting on "Playoff Mode" to be activated this year. They've been sloppy. They've been emotionally strained during this stretch of the season. But this gutsy victory in Denver to go up 2-1 against a team that is a legitimate threat is a great game to build off of heading into a much-needed All-Star break.

Lakers Weekly Roundup #10: Hot Start 2020
First Week:
1/1: vs. Phoenix 107-117 [W] (27-7)

Oh my goodness, I have a lot of games to cover after pushing this for awhile now. I apologize for that. I am currently busy with some things. But first and foremost, belated Happy New Year to Laker Nation. I hope you all are off to a good start to 2020 as the Lakers are off to a good start this year. The LakeShow still managed to end 2019 on a high note despite a 5-game losing streak with wins over Portland and Dallas as recapped in Roundup #9. And they're carrying that over by going 6-0 so far, ringing in the New Year.
I watched highlights and most of the portions of the games of the Lakers' first two weeks and January and I figured for this week, I might as well condense these games instead of providing my quick thoughts on each individual game (thanks lazy me).
If we compare, the first week was a week of "unsatisfactory wins." The Lakers had three games against sub .500 teams. If we go back to that Phoenix game on NYD, that game should've been a wire-to-wire blowout. They outscored the Suns 17-43 in the first quarter, putting 74 total points at the half. They should put their foot on the gas and let LeBron and AD rest throughout the 4th. But nope, they let them back in the game before regaining control in the 4th. The same can be said for the games against the Pelicans and Pistons.
Against the Pelicans, it was a homecoming for Zo, B.I., and Josh Hart. There's no denying that they're good young players. They were just put in a bad situation on a team that expects championships out of the gate. Still, it was worth the trade for prime AD. AD burned the Pelicans again with 46 points. Danny Green went off for 25 points going 6-10 from deep. Still, LeBron and AD are not sitting out until about 1 minute left in the 4th when the game is well out of reach. Against the Pistons, the finish of the game had trap game written all over it. Detroit is lifeless team, yet Derrick Rose returned to MVP form with 28 points and almost singlehandedly carried the Pistons to victory. But, the Lakers prevailed with a block party hosted by Davis (8 blocks), JaVale McGee (6 blocks), and Dwight Howard (5 blocks). I should point out KCP and Avery Bradley sustained injuries this game, which explains the lack of production in the back court with the exception of 13 points from Caruso.
The 2nd week was a lot better. I won't go too deep into the Knicks game because honestly, the Knicks are a dumpster fire. It was embarrassing they swept the Lakers last season. But, the tables have turned this time around. The only notable story that game was AD's scary fall while he was going up for a dunk. Luckily, X-Rays came out negative and he's going to miss a few games with a bruised tailbone barring any setback. The back-to-back wins against Dallas and OKC were most impressive as they continued their dominance on the road. The Lakers took the season series against the Mavs. LeBron James went beast mode as a scorer and rebounder with 35 points, 16 rebounds, and 7 assists sans Anthony Davis. We tend to forget that LeBron can literally play all 5 positions. JaVale and Dwight were in foul trouble this game and that freed up the idea to play 'Bron at Center. Meanwhile, the defense did a good job keeping Luka in check for the first half. He made a meme out of himself, ripping part of his jersey off. The thing about the Mavericks is they live and die by the three and getting Doncic going is the key to that. Once he struggles, their offense fizzles out and that was the case on Friday. Yes, they didn't have Porzingis, but the Lakers didn't have AD. So that cancels out.
Against OKC, no 'Bron. No AD. No problem. Before this game, the Thunder have become the biggest surprise in this stretch of the season winning seven of their eight games and in the 7th seed in the West. This is all because Chris Paul has found the fountain of youth with his scoring and playmaking and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has emerged as a scorer during for OKC. This game was expected to be tough for the Lakers without their top two stars. That's until Kyle Kuzma re-introduced himself. He must've heard the trade rumors for Bogdan Bogdanovic from Sacramento as he poured 36 points on the Thunder. However, this was a great team effort win. Rondo stepped up with a near triple-double of 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists. The bench had solid contributions from Quinn Cook (13 points), Dwight Howard (12 points), Troy Daniels (12 points), and Alex Caruso (11 points). You think the Lakers lack depth? Hold Rob Pelinka's contract extension and promotion to VP of Basketball Operations.

Lakers Weekly Roundup Week 4: Taking Care of Business
The loss against Toronto two Sundays ago stung the Lakers and they continued to sit as the 2nd best record in the NBA...behind Boston (bleh). But a loss is sometimes good. Multiple losses? Not quite. So far, the Lakers have stead clear of a losing skid. This past week's schedule presents a much easier stretch for the purple and gold. Why it's against teams that they're expected to beat! As always, it's better to not take any opponent for granted and the Lakers are well aware of that to start this season. Let's see how they fared this stretch!
11/12: @ Phoenix 123-115 [W] (8-2)
HIGHLIGHTS
Ah, good to finally see that the team is at full strength with the return of Rajon Rondo. Last Sunday was a tough loss to the defending champions, but it's time to put that in the rear view mirror with a bounceback win against the Phoenix Suns. When you think of the Phoenix Suns in the past, you think easy win. They've turned heads so far this season with a few upset wins on their belt. They are a high octane scoring team that can light up the scoreboard. The Lakers clearly got the memo here and played with a lot of urgency. Anthony Davis dominated his way with 24 points and 12 rebounds, but he had help closing this game out. LeBron did what he did with the 19 points and 11 assists, but it was the supporting cast that stepped up. Danny Green comes alive after a string of quiet games where he was a non-factor with 14 points. Dwight Howard notched a near double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds. And Kyle Kuzma, he had a terrible string of games against Miami and Toronto, but he came up big in his 23 point performance this game. No question, the Suns are on the come up. They finally have some veterans they can rely on. Ricky Rubio's addition takes a load off Devin Booker and allows him to do what he do best...score. But, the Lakers came to play and re-exert their hot start as the top team in the West.
11/13: vs. Golden State 94-120 [W] (9-2)
HIGHLIGHTS
For the past 5 years, the Golden State gods enacted their reign of terror across the NBA. When teams see the Warriors, they'd either cower in fear or answer the challenge...and fall short as they're overmatched by their talent. Now, let's look at this year, the Warriors are a shadow of their once unstoppable dynasty. They are no longer the gods of the NBA and are banished to league purgatory. To all my Warrior fans, have a seat. Welcome to the period that is rebuilding.
With the Dubs no longer a threat, the Lakers decide to rule out AD and Rondo for this game. Rondo just got back from injury. And of course, AD is a key piece. They will need the 'Brow healthy down the stretch. No AD? No Rondo? No problem as the Lakers stepped it up and beat down the Warriors like they should. Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee anchored the inside in AD's absence. McGee had 18 points, 17 rebounds, and 3 blocks and Dwight had 15 points, 8 rebounds, and a block. I'm astonished Dwight is -4. It could be the foul trouble and some missed free throws. He did have some defensive breakdowns, but Dwight's performance was on par with McGee this game. Nonetheless, both bigs filled in well and dominated the Warriors' weak interior D. As mentioned no AD this game, but LeBron and Kuzma proved that the Lakers have an alternate dynamic duo in place. LeBron ran circles around this Warrior team: 23 points, 12 assists on 11-21 shooting. There was a scare in the first half when he slipped. We all know what happened on Christmas Day. But, luckily no injury for the King. Funny enough, the Lakers had a comfortable lead that he was not needed for the 4th quarter. Kuzma picked up the slack in scoring with 22 points on an efficient 7-12 shooting. He's really getting back into the groove of things and he's going to pick it up more as the season progresses. Quinn Cook chipped in 10 points. He did well against his former team. Nice revenge games for both he and McGee. A dominant win against the Warriors takes me back to the good old days when this was common and all my Warrior friends can't say nothing to me. To Dub Nation I say welcome back to being the punching bag.
11/15: vs. Sacramento 97-99 [W] (10-2)
HIGHLIGHTS
This game was a homecoming for Luke Walton since the Lakers terminated him by season's end. Things got off to a rough start in Luke's first few games coaching the Kings, but they're playing much better as of late. Sacramento has strung together some wins sans their key young pieces in De'Aaron Fox and Marvin Bagley III. It would be sweet revenge for Luke if he coaches the Kings to an upset victory. They started off hot right out of the gate. With the way Luke coaches with that Golden State system, you know the Kings are going to rain threes all night. Things were going fine for Sacramento until LeBron killed Nemanja Bjelica in plain sight during the 2nd quarter. The guy is in his 17th season, yet he's still putting defenders on a poster. This game was a huge scare for the Lakers, especially in the 2nd half. When you think the Lakers were gonna pull away, the Kings kept knocking on the door. It's not just Buddy Hield as a scoring threat, but Richaun Holmes showed out for Sacramento. And there's also Bogdan Bogdanovic to look out for. I still get PTSD from last year when he nailed a cold-blooded three over Tyson Chandler to win the game in their first meeting at Sacramento. The Lakers got some unexpected contributions though. KCP, as much flack as he gets, he made a couple of key buckets in the 4th quarter. That can't be overlooked. Sacramento fought hard, but LeBron and AD closed out the game and finished off the Queens. LeBron made clutch free throws to put the Lakers in front. Then Anthony Davis denied Harrison Barnes as Barnes attempted the game-tying layup.
11/17: vs. Atlanta 101-122 [W] (11-2)
HIGHLIGHTS
Kobe Bryant was at this game! All present Lakers must pay their respects as they are blessed by the Black Mamba's presence. LeBron, Kuz, AD, and even Dwight Howard paid their respects to Kobe. Now, it's time to do him proud, embrace the Mamba Mentality, and kill the opposing team in sight. They did just that this game. Yes, I know it's against the Hawks who are not expected to be good, but they have some good young pieces. Atlanta got blown out the following night against the Clippers and the Lakers did the same. This was a weird game throughout, but all was right for the LakeShow. LeBron put on a show for Kobe with 33 points and draining 6 threes. The Black Mamba gave the King an ounce of his shooting venom for this game. AD had a strange game. He didn't grab a single rebound until the 2nd half. He still racked up some points and blocks though. And Danny Green had the highlight of the night with his putback dunk. I totally forgot he still had some hops. Not much to say about this game. It was just another wire-to-wire victory for the Lakers. They definitely needed this blowout after Friday's thriller.

Lakers Weekly Roundup (03/03): Playoff Mode: ON?

The All-Star break is over. Time for teams to get back to work. This is the most exciting time in the NBA. With fewer games left now on the schedule, teams are getting serious as they get ready for the fight of their playoff lives. The fun and games are O-V-E-R. For the Lakers, it's the most daunting challenge. They have a steep mountain to climb as they trail closely behind the Clippers and the Kings in the race for the 8th seed. The bad news? The Lakers are facing their difficult stretch of the season. Yes, against the top-notch teams that are locking in their playoff position in either conference. This stretch is the measuring stick to see how playoff-ready this team is. Are they up for the challenge? This is this week's Lakers Weekly Roundup.
Keep in mind I combined last week's games with this week's games. I mean, the Lakers just had two games last week. We'll get back to normal in the next week. Without further ado, here's the lengthy Weekly Roundup.
02/21: vs. Houston 106-111 [W] (29-29)
HIGHLIGHTS
Right out of the gate, let's test that playoff intensity after the All-Star break by going up against the surging Houston Rockets. The Rockets have owned the Lakers this season with their flippity floppity tactics. This 4th installments had much more flavor than the last two. Mainly because Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul are on the floor. It feels like it's been ages since that infamous brawl between the two Point Guards back in the 2nd game when the season was still young that reignited this rivalry. And Laker fans since the 70's were taken a trip down memory lane when Kermit Washington sucker punched Rudy Tomjanovich as Rondo landed the 1-2 punch on CP3. On to the present matchup, it looked like the Rockets were going to run away with this. CP3 and Harden were up to their fancy old floppity flop flop bullshit to swindle out a victory against the Lakers. However, Playoff Intensity: ON. King James and the SlenderIngram commanded the Lakers to a rally against the Houston Floppets. Even the refs had enough of the Rockets' flopping ways that Harden and CP3 called out the head referee of this game, Scott Foster. Harden threw a tantrum. CP3 threw a tantrum and got T'd. Mike D'Antoni was up-in-arms. Not so much fun when the calls are not in your favor now is it?
In all seriousness, I was impressed with B.I.'s performance this game. Looks like he's finding his way to get more comfortable playing off ball while still being his aggressive usual self. Reggie Bullock was huge too with some key three pointers down the stretch to seal the win for the Lakers. I'll warm to the trade a little bit. Laker debut was flop, but he's making some okay all-around contributions.

HIGHLIGHTS
All I wish for the Lakers is to build some consistency after a big win. They didn't do so before the break when they got a thrilling victory over the Celtics in Boston. Hopefully, they had the chance to look back and learn from some mistakes.

I should be riding high on this team after a big win against the Rockets, but games like these are the reason why I hold back because this team will find a way to say "fuck you" when it looked like things were coming along just fine. "Oh, their best player is not playing. Let's take it a little easy." If this is the attitude that the Lakers are giving against teams that they should beat, then there is a reason why they're two spots away from the 8th seed. It's even worse that they left Luke Walton, yes there own head coach behind after this game on the bus ride back to the hotel. 0-2 on a road trip against sub .500 teams. Not a good look for a team with playoff aspirations on the line here. My goodness this Grizzlies team is not even good. Since they traded away Marc Gasol, they consist of a group of washed up vets/misfits. Despite some solid efforts by the Lakers' Big 3 of LeBron, B.I., and Kuz, the Lakers fell short as the offense became stagnant as LeBron's effort on defense late in the game. The starting five did its job. The bench failed them here. 7 points compared to the Grizzlies' 33 points in bench scoring has never nor will win any games. It's clear as day that the Lakers left their playoff intensity at home during this road trip. They find themselves with a 4% chance now of making the playoffs as they're placed back at the 11th seed.

Ah yes, Anthony Davis suits up this game as he travels with the Pelicans since the trade drama. If the Lakers struggled against the Pelicans on the road without A.D., what more when they have him on the floor? A.D. did damage because Luke Walton thought it would be a great idea to match up Kyle Kuzma against one of the best big man in the league. Fortunately, the Pelicans had nothing to gain. So, they sat A.D. down after the 3rd quarter. This is something teams do in the preseason. How rare is it that you find a team that shuts their star player down in a regular season game when the outcome is not even decided? The Lakers are not the only team with internal issues. Despite the Pelicans decision, they still competed behind a 35-point effort by Julius Randle and a couple of three balls. But, here comes that playoff intensity as "Deus ex LeBron" bails the Lakers out from impending doom. Let's break down some stat lines here: LeBron, 33 pts, 6 reb, 10 ast. B.I., 23 pts. Kuzma, 22 pts. Rondo, 11 pts, 7 reb, 16 ast. Bullock, 14 pts. For the Lakers to win out, they need statistical output like these from their starting five on a consistent basis. Quality bench contribution is another bonus. Well, playoff mode for the Lakers came back after it hit a snag on the road. Fortunately, the Lakers got some significant help on this night as the Jazz topped the Clippers and the Bucks pulled out a thrilling OT win against the Kings. The race for the 8th seed in the West is far from settled.

The NBA has entered the month "March Madness." This time, NBA teams are serious about jockeying for position for playoff spot. Every game at this month is MUST-WIN. And the Lakers' efforts certainly showed against the East-leading Milwaukee Bucks. The Lakers did everything they can to spring the upset. Unfortunately, they gassed out in the 4th quarter against a better team. Good teams find ways to win.

Boy, did I have a feeling something would go wrong in this game? When an aspiring playoff-team loses to the Phoenix Suns, a franchise that is the living embodiment of mediocrity, then truly the sky is falling down. The Lakers have owned the Suns this season, but they couldn't get the job done in getting the sweep. This team isn't even good despite the likes of Devin Booker and DeAndre Ayton. The Lakers did attempt to rally in this game though. But I'm sorry, if you have to rally and come from behind against a mediocre Phoenix squad, then there's serious problems. Ask yourself this my fellow Lakers fans, do you really think this team is good enough to make some noise in the playoffs? The fact they loss to the shittier teams like the Hawks, Grizzlies, Pelicans, Cavs, and Suns, and swept by the Magic is the team's mark of being a pretender. Even if Lonzo Ball comes back, that's a big IF, this team is gonna have to run a really tough gauntlet if you look at the schedule this month. Playoff Mode has been activated alright. Unfortunately, the free trial ended in the win against Houston.
The All-Star break is over. Time for teams to get back to work. This is the most exciting time in the NBA. With fewer games left now on the schedule, teams are getting serious as they get ready for the fight of their playoff lives. The fun and games are O-V-E-R. For the Lakers, it's the most daunting challenge. They have a steep mountain to climb as they trail closely behind the Clippers and the Kings in the race for the 8th seed. The bad news? The Lakers are facing their difficult stretch of the season. Yes, against the top-notch teams that are locking in their playoff position in either conference. This stretch is the measuring stick to see how playoff-ready this team is. Are they up for the challenge? This is this week's Lakers Weekly Roundup.

02/21: vs. Houston 106-111 [W] (29-29)
HIGHLIGHTS
Right out of the gate, let's test that playoff intensity after the All-Star break by going up against the surging Houston Rockets. The Rockets have owned the Lakers this season with their flippity floppity tactics. This 4th installments had much more flavor than the last two. Mainly because Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul are on the floor. It feels like it's been ages since that infamous brawl between the two Point Guards back in the 2nd game when the season was still young that reignited this rivalry. And Laker fans since the 70's were taken a trip down memory lane when Kermit Washington sucker punched Rudy Tomjanovich as Rondo landed the 1-2 punch on CP3. On to the present matchup, it looked like the Rockets were going to run away with this. CP3 and Harden were up to their fancy old floppity flop flop bullshit to swindle out a victory against the Lakers. However, Playoff Intensity: ON. King James and the SlenderIngram commanded the Lakers to a rally against the Houston Floppets. Even the refs had enough of the Rockets' flopping ways that Harden and CP3 called out the head referee of this game, Scott Foster. Harden threw a tantrum. CP3 threw a tantrum and got T'd. Mike D'Antoni was up-in-arms. Not so much fun when the calls are not in your favor now is it?
In all seriousness, I was impressed with B.I.'s performance this game. Looks like he's finding his way to get more comfortable playing off ball while still being his aggressive usual self. Reggie Bullock was huge too with some key three pointers down the stretch to seal the win for the Lakers. I'll warm to the trade a little bit. Laker debut was flop, but he's making some okay all-around contributions.

Lakers Weekly Roundup (01/27): "Kingdom Under Fire"

Let's be perfectly honest Laker Nation, not a lot has gone right for the Lakers since the injury bug hit them. As Purple and Gold Royalty continues to record staggering lows, perhaps it is time to make a move or two as most Laker fans are clamoring for it. Talks of Anthony Davis wanting out of New Orleans is heating up as the trade deadline nears with the Lakers being the preferred destination. Instead of the young core of Kuzma, Hart, Ingram, Ball, and Zubac being untouchable, they are now potential pieces for a blockbuster to acquire the services of the "Unibrow." In other news, the strings of losses since the injuries have possibly put Luke Walton's job in jeopardy. The King's camp is reportedly not happy of coach Luke's efforts to hold the team together. There may be some merit to justify Luke's firing, such as the team looks uninspired, demoralized, and overwhelmed against some of the better teams in the league. As the saying goes, coaches coach and players play. Laker fans in forums continue to lament on past young pieces, such that they wished they had D'Angelo Russell and Julius Randle back as D'Lo continues to put Brooklyn on the map in an impressive winning streak or Randle still putting up pts and rebs and leading the 2nd unit for the Pelicans. Truly, it opens up a case of what-ifs. Maybe the team needs an overhaul on their player development staff or it's finally time for a "changing-of-the-guard" in ownership. Dear Jeanie, will you lead the Lakers back to the promised land? Or are you just another product of the late, great Dr. Jerry Buss's inheritance like your brother Jim before you? Hmmm, this does remind me of another guy who inherited his father's team and is currently burning it to the ground in Oakland and has no idea where to play before heading to Sin City. Luckily for the Lakers, the Golden State gods of Oakland decided to grant mercy on them as they only needed Klay, god of catch-and-shoot, to rain threes on them to the tune of 38 points in a 2nd half blowout. The other gods? They had the night off. But Steph, the god of rainbow threes took quite a Shaqtin' tumble in the 3rd quarter.

Lakers Weekly Roundup (12/02): Bad Nuggets, Free Tacos (Except Friday)!

Playing in Staples Center, there are two things Laker fans expect: 1) a win 2) free tacos from Jack-in-the-Box. It doesn't matter if the Lakers are blowing an opponent out by 30 or 40 points. If they don't hold opponents to under 100, Laker fans in attendance will not be too thrilled of going home without free tacos. This is your Lakers Weekly Roundup!
11/27: @ Denver 117-85 [L] (11-9)
HIGHLIGHTS
Talk about a Mile High asswhoopin'. The Nuggets avenged their October loss by putting a curbstomping on the Lakers. Kudos to them, they had a well-balanced game.The defense suffocated the Lakers ability to play at the fast pace they wanted. The tone was Nuggets basketball, especially in the 2nd half. They blew this shit wide open and the Lakers couldn't do anything about, especially when they were missing a lot of shots. It was not the ideal Denver homecoming for JaVale McGee as he put up his worst outing of this breakout season with just a mere 2 points. We'll let Denver have this one as they needed something to spark this "rivalry" as they're always at the short end of the stick. The Nuggets have shown a lot potential as a playoff contender. The question remains whether or not they can sustain that success, especially down the stretch.
11/29: vs. Indiana [W] 96-104 [W] (12-9)
HIGHLIGHTS
The Lakers have a four game home stand starting with this game. They should take advantage of this. The first quarter was thing of beauty this game. You see what happens when the Lakers go full throttle on both ends of the floor? The activity was awesome as the Lakers generated turnover after turnover. Stop after stop. Going the length of the court for easy, unselfish buckets. They didn't allow Indiana to score their first bucket like 5 minutes into the first quarter. They got the Pacers pounded into submission with a 13-32 first quarter. This should be a decisive W. Victor Oladipo is not there pick up the slack. Then, all of a sudden that lead became a distant memory as the Pacers made a huge run. We were all like "not this shit again" as this is textbook example of the Lakers' inability to play with a big lead. LeBron ex Machina came in to save the day at the expense of the Pacers the same way he was able to do back in Cleveland. Free tacos for everyone!
11/30 vs. Dallas 103-114 [W] (13-9)
HIGHLIGHTS
As the Lakers got themselves to a fast start he previous day against the Pacers, they got themselves to a really slow start this game. Dallas came in and punched them right in the mouth. Luka Doncic blocked LeBron not once, but twice early on this game. Seems the student has surpassed the master as Doncic grew up idolizing LeBron. However, Karma strikes those who lay their hands on the King...twice. Proceed to be shut down by Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram the rest of the way. Doncic shot a terrible 2-13 from the field and 0-5 from beyond the arc. There's no question this rookie is a star in the making though. Lonzo Ball continues to establish himself as a severely underrated perimeter defender, generating 5 steals. First team all defense awaits. The Lakers may have won this game, but they lost the tacos as they couldn't lay their hands off the Mavericks down the stretch. Seriously though, those tacos from Jack-in-the-Box are only 99 cents. I'm sure Laker fans can squeeze one more dollar if they paid $500+ for a ticket.
12/02 vs. Phoenix 96-120 [W] (14-9)
HIGHLIGHTS
The Suns started off with a 17 point lead this game? Never noticed. Phoenix got themselves a great start this game as they fired on all cylinders in the first quarter. As much of a confidence builder this was, the Suns truly remembered who they were onward: trash disguised as an NBA team. I'm pretty sure the Lakers just spotted them a 17 point lead before they started putting the clamps on Phoenix from the 2nd quarter till the rest of the game. LeBron and Kuzma combined for 45 point and the bench got a much-needed big contribution from Michael Beasley. Holy hell, it took 'em awhile to finally put him in the rotation. Another big factor this game was that Devin Booker was limited to just 6 points this game. I'm sure Lonzo Ball once again had to do with that with his 4 steals this game. In all seriousness though, the Suns still can't get it right despite having a promising young core. How many more tanking seasons do they need to get back to being relevant? In other news, it was good to see Moe Wagner get some action with 10 points. Nothing says welcome to the NBA when JaVale McGee and Tyson Chandler get hyped for your first points in the NBA. Hopefully he finds his way into the rotation. I saw some really good glimpses in garbage time. Free tacos for everyone!

HIGHLIGHTS
As the Lakers got themselves to a fast start he previous day against the Pacers, they got themselves to a really slow start this game. Dallas came in and punched them right in the mouth. Luka Doncic blocked LeBron not once, but twice early on this game. Seems the student has surpassed the master as Doncic grew up idolizing LeBron. However, Karma strikes those who lay their hands on the King...twice. Proceed to be shut down by Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram the rest of the way. Doncic shot a terrible 2-13 from the field and 0-5 from beyond the arc. There's no question this rookie is a star in the making though. Lonzo Ball continues to establish himself as a severely underrated perimeter defender, generating 5 steals. First team all defense awaits. The Lakers may have won this game, but they lost the tacos as they couldn't lay their hands off the Mavericks down the stretch. Seriously though, those tacos from Jack-in-the-Box are only 99 cents. I'm sure Laker fans can squeeze one more dollar if they paid $500+ for a ticket.
12/02 vs. Phoenix 96-120 [W] (14-9)
HIGHLIGHTS
The Suns started off with a 17 point lead this game? Never noticed. Phoenix got themselves a great start this game as they fired on all cylinders in the first quarter. As much of a confidence builder this was, the Suns truly remembered who they were onward: trash disguised as an NBA team. I'm pretty sure the Lakers just spotted them a 17 point lead before they started putting the clamps on Phoenix from the 2nd quarter till the rest of the game. LeBron and Kuzma combined for 45 point and the bench got a much-needed big contribution from Michael Beasley. Holy hell, it took 'em awhile to finally put him in the rotation. Another big factor this game was that Devin Booker was limited to just 6 points this game. I'm sure Lonzo Ball once again had to do with that with his 4 steals this game. In all seriousness though, the Suns still can't get it right despite having a promising young core. How many more tanking seasons do they need to get back to being relevant? In other news, it was good to see Moe Wagner get some action with 10 points. Nothing says welcome to the NBA when JaVale McGee and Tyson Chandler get hyped for your first points in the NBA. Hopefully he finds his way into the rotation. I saw some really good glimpses in garbage time. Free tacos for everyone!

Lakers Weekly Roundup (10/28): "Two Wins, But Still Can't Beat the Spurs!"

Welcome in to the first edition of the Lakers' Weekly roundup. So, our Lakers carried on without Slenderman and Rondo Rousey (for 75% of this week). This wasn't a bad week for Showtime reincarnate, but they couldn't find a way to beat the San Antonio White Walkers lead by the Pop King. Let's see how they fared for the week:

Once again, the defense had a lot of problems as they allowed the Spurs to drop 40 points in the first quarter. KuzMania ran wild to lead the Lakers back so did LeBron with a game tying three. Unfortunately, we were introduced to the old glory days of LeBron turning from "LeClutch" to "LeChoke" as he missed key free throws down the stretch, which set up the Spurs to steal one in LaLa Land.
Oct 24: @ Phoenix [W] 131-113 (1-3)
HIGHLIGHTS
Finally Luke! It took you long enough to insert Josh Hart in the lineup over Kentavious Caldwell-Poop. The lineup changes translated in a W over the hapless Suns, which saw unlikely contributions from JaVale McGee, Shaqtin' a Fool legend with 20 points and 4 blocks and Make 'em Dance Lance Stephenson with 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists off the bench. Then again, this win is against the lowly Suns who despite having a promising young core are still having all kinds of problems. GM fired. More injuries plague Devin Booker. I wouldn't be surprise if this team also tanks for Zion Williamson next year. Jeez, how many first round picks do y'all need? Well, trust the process Suns fans. Whatever floats your boat. Maybe your team pulls a Philadelphia 76ers down the line.

The Lakers come back home to take on the previously undefeated Nuggets after they put a curb stomp on the Suns. The Nuggets just came off an early signature win against the arrogant fucks from the East Bay and dismantling the Queens. Tough test for the Lakers indeed. But, in the words of the late Dennis Green, the Nuggets "are who we thought they were," a fringe playoff team at best in the West. King James pierced a "Lance" on their promising start, taking down the Joker (Nikola Jokic) and his henchmen, while earning his first triple double in the Purple and Gold. Meanwhile, Lonzo Ball was a thief in the night with 5 steals and a cold blooded assassin with a step back 3 at the end of the fourth to put the game away. Hmmm...maybe LiAngelo could learn from his big bro to steal. Steal balls on the court, not steal fake Gucci products in China off the court.

The Lakers are riding high after a slow start. They can get to .500. They could redeem themselves from Monday's lost against the Spurs by beating them in San Antonio. Rondo is back, they're almost at full strength. Unfortunately, that didn't bode well for coach Walton and his Lukewarm rotation. I mean cause playing two pass first guards in the same lineup works right? Lonzo probably partied a little too hard for his 21st birthday being a non-factor all game. Well, the good thing here is that LeBron surpassed the Master of Awkward Basketball in Dirk Nowitzki on the all-time scoring list. Congrats LeBron. But sorry Rondo had to trigger your PTSD of J.R. Smith in the finals as he passed up a wide open layup for a contested three. The definition of an open layup in the clutch does not exist in the dictionary for Rondo. Then again, Lakers had no timeouts, so I can definitely see why he did that. BUT STILL, WTF WAS THAT LAST PLAY? I think DeMar DeRozan found the right team to break the LeBron jinx he couldn't overcome in Toronto. Oh wait, there's still a lot of games to play.

Lakers Retain Home Game Win Streak vs. Suns

Brandon Ingram lead all Lakers in scoring with 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists to lead the Lakers past the Suns 93-112, extending their win streak at Staples Center to 7 wins. Julius Randle followed with 21 points and 8 rebounds, Josh Hart added another double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Brook Lopez was on target from deep with 12 points on four 3-pointers. Kyle Kuzma was brought back to life this game, racking up 16 points for the 2nd unit while Larry Nance Jr. did work on the boards with 10 rebounds.

It was a good finish after a sluggish start to the game. I think the Lakers got a little too comfortable returning back home after a solid stretch on the road. Phoenix was getting any shot they wanted. There was not a lot of on ball pressure from the Lakers defense during the first half. Also, I thought the Suns did a good job using their size out-rebounding the Lakers during that half. But, by the time the 2nd half went underway, there was a different energy from the Lakers. They went back to their formula that made them successful: be aggressive, play good team defense, and run with the basketball from end to end. They definitely picked up the intensity on both ends of the floor. The Suns, after a terrific start, finished the night shooting under 40%. Randle, Ingram, Hart, Lopez, and Kuzma did a whole lot of work. Josh Hart continues to impress by playing his game with confidence. Ingram was nearly unstoppable this game as he attacked the Suns' defense non-stop on his way to the basket. It's impressive to think that since Luke put Hart in the lineup and Ingram at point, the Lakers got back to playing the high octane, fast pace tempo they wanted to play when Lonzo was on the floor before he got hurt. So far, it continues to work. Lopez was on target again from three-point land. I'd like to see him take more shots inside. But when the 3-points shot goes, it goes and if Lopez can find that balance, scoring outside and inside, look out. Randle played the usual bully ball. He was a little sloppy with the basketball during this game though. The shooting guard position anchored by KCP and Clarkson were a let down. Clarkson just missed all kinds of shots. He made up in the 4th quarter, but he couldn't buy a bucket to start. KCP only got his points off a dunk and couple of free throws. Hart's emergence just got the Lakers to trade Clarkson. You know what rhymes with emergence? Resurgence. And we saw a resurgence from Kyle Kuzma this game. He's been quiet in the last couple of games, but it was nice to see he gained a little bit of his offense back in this game. The late 1st round picks of the 2017 draft, Kuzma and Hart, showed out this game. The Lakers are on pace to break last year's win total of 26 wins and we're not even in the All-Star break yet. It goes to show that this team's arrow is pointing up after rough years since the 2012-13 season.

Kyle Kuzma had a career night Friday night, pouring in 30 points and 10 rebounds, but the Lakers could not stop Devin Booker and the Suns this time around, losing 122-113. Brook Lopez also notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to go with 4 blocks. Brandon Ingram racked up 17 points and 8 rebounds and KCP added 13 points to round out the starters. Julius Randle lead all scorers off the bench with 13 points.

And based off the game, the Lakers looked like they were the ones on a back-to-back. Of course, the highlight of the game last night, Kyle Kuzma. He struggled to get his shot going in the first half. But in the 2nd half, he caught fire and single-handedly kept the Lakers afloat when it looked like the Suns were gonna run away in this game. The biggest thing in how Kuzma got going was that he was looking to attack and his shot just followed with it. However, Kuzma's career-high was overshadowed big time by the Suns hitting some timely shots, Devin Booker getting his way in scoring, and the Lakers stopping their own momentum with some turnovers and missed shots. They were daring guys like Dragan Bender to shoot and he made sure the Lakers' defense paid big time with some key three pointers. Brook Lopez missed a couple of threes that stalled the Lakers' series of runs. He struggled from beyond the arc. Laker players made some unforced errors down the stretch. And most notably, they could not slow down Devin Booker down. He finally had a high-scoring performance go his way against the Lakers.

Lakers Finish Road Trip with Win Over Suns

Jordan Clarkson dropped 25 points off the bench on 11-19 shooting to lead the Lakers past the Suns 100-93, overcoming a 30+ point game by Devin Booker. Corey Brewer followed with 13 points to round out the bench. On the starters, Brook Lopez and KCP were co-leading scorers as each scored 15 points. Lopez notched a double-double with 10 rebounds while Caldwell-Pope almost recorded one with 9 rebounds. Kyle Kuzma had a quiet game, but finished strong with 11 points and 6 rebounds.

When Clarkson's on fire and he's shooting efficiently from the field off the bench, it tends to be a good sign for the Lakers. The Suns opened up a big lead to start this game and the Lakers closed the gap when JC came off the bench and started stringing together made shots. Most of them were high percentage shots too. If you see his individual highlights he ad a lot of space between the him and whoever was guarding from the Suns. And the key thing is that he was decisive. It helps especially when he has the stroke. It was not just Clarkson's good game, but I thought the Lakers did a great job turning up defensively, especially late in the 2nd half. Devin Booker's 36 points is a smear on the defensive effort. But, he's going to get his shots regardless. Kyle Kuzma didn't play a good game, but he finished strong in the 4th quarter to give the Lakers some clutch shots to seal the deal this game. Also, Corey Brewer had a surprising 17 point performance. He's been absolutely terrific against Phoenix. In the last meeting against Phoenix, he hounded Booker and they had intense one-on-one matchup respectively when Brewer "D'd" up on Booker. This game, he was hustling on both sides of the ball. Certainly, a win against Phoenix not impressive since they are projected to be bad once again. But, the Lakers just needed something positive to cap off their brutal 4-game road trip. Remember, three of those games were up against the better teams in the East and the Lakers lost all three of them. Tomorrow's matchup against the 76ers should be an interesting one. The Sixers might have found their Big 3 of the future in Embiid, Simmons, and Covington. They put up some big numbers last night in their comeback win over the Clippers. There are a lot of headlines heading into tomorrow's game. Both teams have good young cores and future stars. Lonzo Ball and Ben Simmons are front runners for Rookie of the Year. Kyle Kuzma may creep up with them if he continues to play this well into the season. But also, in last year's draft, Ben Simmons went #1 while Brandon Ingram went #2 respectively. We finally get to see the top two picks in last year's draft go head-to-head. I'll see you guys tomorrow night for that game.

Lakers Hang On for First Win of the Season vs. Suns

So, I just had two straight heart attacks in these last two days. NBA TV aired the finish of this game. Nance had a nice defensive block, but T.J. Warren got the offensive rebound and Ingram fouled out. The Lakers were fortunate Warren missed those free throws. And for those calling for the heads of Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram last night, when it was the first game of the season, well they bounced back in a huge way. Lonzo had a big night tonight, flirting with triple-double numbers of 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists as he lead the Lakers to a 132-130 victory over Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns. Brandon Ingram, despite fouling out in the last seconds, bounced back from his woeful shooting last night, scored 25 points on an efficient 9-14 shooting. Brook Lopez added a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds and a couple clutch shots to settle things down when the Suns were making a run. And Larry Nance Jr. added 14 points to round out the starters. Jordan Clarkson did work again as the 6th man, finishing with 17 points. Kyle Kuzma also had a better night tonight, adding up 15 points off the bench.

So, I just had two straight heart attacks in these last two days. NBA TV aired the finish of this game. Nance had a nice defensive block, but T.J. Warren got the offensive rebound and Ingram fouled out. The Lakers were fortunate Warren missed those free throws. And for those calling for the heads of Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram last night, when it was the first game of the season, well they bounced back in a huge way. Lonzo had a big night tonight, flirting with triple-double numbers of 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists as he lead the Lakers to a 132-130 victory over Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns. Brandon Ingram, despite fouling out in the last seconds, bounced back from his woeful shooting last night, scored 25 points on an efficient 9-14 shooting. Brook Lopez added a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds and a couple clutch shots to settle things down when the Suns were making a run. And Larry Nance Jr. added 14 points to round out the starters. Jordan Clarkson did work again as the 6th man, finishing with 17 points. Kyle Kuzma also had a better night tonight, adding up 15 points off the bench.

Lonzo Ball did a nice job in balancing passiveness-aggressiveness here in this game. It's a drastic improvement from the Thursday night opener vs. the Clippers. For a 2nd game in his rookie year, Ball was fearless in attacking the basket and it looks like his jump shot is coming along earlier than expected. The same can be said for Ingram in last night's game. Thursday night, most of his shots fell short. This game, Ingram put more arc and touch on his shot and he was more aggressive in attacking the basket. Interesting enough, Corey Brewer played the "Patrick Beverly" role in hounding Devin Booker and eventually both players got into a little scrum in the 3rd quarter. The biggest thing these Lakers need to improve on is closing out and that should be the emphasis for a young team. Lonzo just gave the Lakers a six point lead, but they committed a slew of fouls at the end to make it come down to a pair of missed free throws and one more defensive play. Still, good win for the Lakers. A win against the Suns isn't too special to some NBA fans, but Lakers needed some kind of confidence builder and last night's game was the one with Ball and Ingram going off for a combined 40+ points.

Lakers' Young "Sinister Six" Comes Up Big in Win @ Phoenix

Welcome in to the full recap of the Lakers' road matchup vs. the Phoenix Suns where the Lakers snap a long losing streak to defeat the Suns 122-110.
Laker Nation, I want you guys to mark this game down. Remember it. Because what we've seen is the potential when the Lakers play a complete game behind the young players. Russell, Randle, Clarkson, Nance Jr., Ingram, Zubac, they all came to play tonight. Late in the 4th quarter was pretty ugly though. Defensive lapses were apparent yet again. It was like "uh oh, the Lakers are gonna blow another lead in the 4th." But, Clarkson comes up big with a pair of clutch steal and D'Angelo Russell knocks down a dagger three to seal the game. But, still great effort by the six players that headline the youth movement.

Ivica Zubac, 14 points, 7-13 shooting. Honestly, Luke Walton should consider about starting this man at Center after this game. The Suns were dominating the Lakers in the paint, but Zubac was a one man wrecking crew tonight against the Suns' interior. The soft touch was on display. He's one of the last of a dying breed in the traditional big man.
D'Angelo Russell, 28 points, 10-20 shooting. And people will still be like "trade this man!" This is the cleanest game I've seen from D'Lo. He didn't turn the ball over, he was aggressive when needed to be, and he had the stroke tonight, shooting six 3-pointers. Essentially, consistency and defense are things he need to work on. But, when you looked at his production since the Lou Williams trade, he has taken over the reins. It's just a matter of patience and it's unfortunate that despite the boost in production, some "fans" still want him traded. Yes, he'll piss us off at times. We get it, he's not Kobe. He's D'Angelo Russell.
Brandon Ingram, 14 points, 6 rebounds. I like Reggie Miller's advice on commentary to Ingram, hit the gym and shoot a thousand threes young fella. But, as always I liked Ingram's assertiveness. The kid was on a rack attack tonight, trying to put anybody on a poster. I like that. But, other than that, if he gets the jump shot to go as well as the three point shooting, he's going to reach that Kevin Durant potential.
Larry Nance Jr., 13 points, 8 rebounds. Larry Nance Jr. instilling some of that "Mamba" mentality of playing through a wrist injury. That has gotta be hurting with all the dunks he had and the rebounds tonight. But, that's what he'll do, he'll put his body and soul on the line to bring energy to the Lakers.
Jordan Clarkson, 19 points, 7-18 shooting. Clarkson continues to remain consistent as the Lakers' sixth man since the Lakers traded Lou Williams. He is so much better when he is looking to attack the basket. He had those 2 clutch steals late in the 4th to stop the bleeding because the Suns would've definitely have come back and taken the lead.
Julius Randle, 13 points, 8 rebounds. Speaking of a thousand threes, Randle should think about that too. Honestly, when Randle was settling for the three point shot, I was saying my head "no, that's not your game!" But hey, he hit them and one of those were timely when the Suns were hanging around. He can be better without being so clunky and without playing like a chicken who's lost his head.

4th quarter defensive lapse. The Suns going on that 11-1 run is the only blemish on the game. What can I say? They've struggled to close games out, especially on the road. Playing a 100% complete game is still a work-in-progress for this young squad.

Just let him play and develop. This is what it's about at this point of the season. This is hands down, one D'Lo's best games and one of his cleanest games of the season. He definitely had ice in those veins tonight.
Conclusion
In all honesty, it is pure insanity for the Lakers to trade any of the young core. If Magic likes what he sees from them, then we gotta "trust the process." Okay, maybe we sold high on this game because it's gonna be hard for them to replicate this kind of game. But, that's what makes it part of the growing pains. Let these young guys get experience to polish their game and reach their potential. Like I said, this win tonight serves as a glimpse of what the Lakers could be in the future behind their young talent. Overall, good win and a fantastic game from the six players that hold the key to the Lakers' future. I'll see you guys later.

That defensive lapse almost gave me a heart attack right there. This is hands down the best game the young Lakers have looked all season long. Randle, Russell, Ingram, Clarkson, Nance, Zubac all in double figures and showed the potential on what they can possibly be in the future. This win may have disrupted the tank process for a bit, but I'm privileged to cover this game and witness a complete game, well not quite complete because of the defensive lapse in the 4th quarter. But still, this game is the sound of progression in the development process. Stay tuned for the full recap.

That's a nice way to end the quarter with a three pointer by Jordan Clarkson. Well, this is gonna be a game of who's tanking more. The Suns at one point were leading big. It's like "oh, here we go, the Lakers are going to get blown out in the first quarter." The Lakers were turning the ball over and getting outmuscled in the paint this quarter. But, the threes are hitting early on. D'Lo and B.I. are carrying the team in terms of scoring. The Lakers are being mindful of making this a game and tanking for a top 3 pick at the same time.

Clarkson with another last shot to end the quarter. The score is what you'd expect with two young teams jockeying for position at the top 3 spots for the draft. The first half, I liked what I'm seeing from the young Lakers. D'Lo's shot is on point during the half. Ingram struggling with his shot, but still making aggressive moves to the basket. And how about Ivica Zubac during this quarter? Len's block might've had him crashing down, but he was on fire in the post, displaying the soft touch. He offers a glimmer of hope for the traditional, post up big man in a guard driven league. Obviously, Devin Booker and Eric Bledsoe got hot late and that's why the Suns were able to reclaim the lead. This is what you expect from a tanking team. Just make the score close and compete. If the Lakers win tonight, I believe the Suns still have one more win over them, so it shouldn't affect the draft lottery chances. But, overall, I liked what I saw in the first half. Hope it carries on in the second half, which will open up shortly.
